I just tried something I happened to have around. We got a bit of stainless stuff in the kitchen (kitchen sink and pots mainly) and we do have a cleaner for that which has some abrasive and it leaves the surface as if it was oiled. I put a drop of this cleaner on some cardboard and used that for stropping. Gave me not only the usual sharpness after stropping, but also a nice mirror finish on the edge and should have left a protective layer as well. The latter won't hold up for long, cause I use the knife daily.
