What is the etiquitte here..

Selling a knife on the exchange..I recieve a email from an interested party.he sends me three emails.

1. first email..Interested in the knife asks for my best price and he will consider buying the knife..I shoot him a price with shipping
2. second email comes 24 hrs later agreeing on the price and asking if the knife has box and papers..Well I stated. in the original post that the knife was NIB..guess this guy does not know what that means..
3. now ..no payment..no communication... in the last 16 hrs...and I have another firm offer on this knife..

What the heck does one do??

Well one spells it etiquette, for starters.

Sounds like he's pushing it a bit. And a bit depends on what you asked of him, in relation to payment in particular. Also whether the acceptance was unequivocal, such that the bit about box and papers was more in the line of an afterthought. If you want to avoid a fuss, etc etc etc, I'd email again, explaining that you don't want to appear pushy, but also don't want to dick around either. Tell him you have another party interested even. If you don't hear back within about 8 hours, give or take, send another saying sorry but in the circumstances you couldn't see another course of action. In the meantime, send an email to the other guy, giving a brief idea of the situation and asking if he's prepared to wait and see. If he isn't, that might influence the 8 hour bit, a bit.

Well fine, but you can throw the word etiquette out of the equation, in that case. And see what happens...

#1- Depends on who the buyer is.Is he a new guy or some one that has been around the block.
#2- Money talks-bullshit walks
#3- SELL THE KNIFE.First guy that says I"LL TAKE IT,TAKES IT.

My.02

Well the first one of these deals he ran into I thought he jumped the gun for a fast sell but he has obviously given at least 40hrs. for this one so sell that puppy before the other guy finds another.Ettiquette be damned or not, he gave enough time on this one for sure.

Just my opinion and all spelling errors are mine so I like 'm' that way, go for it Ren.

I must confess to thinking something similar lifter. Life with Ren certainly is funny. You've got to have some sympathy in relation to this situation of course. It does confirm him further as a decent guy actually, just for putting this up.

I really hope his wife didn't/doesn't produce the notorious meatloaf for dinner...

Edited to add:

Jerry I don't dispute that, but I'm trying to save some hassle in the long run. 8 hours wont be too traumatic.

You can spell as badly as you like, sure.

Ren,

It's YOUR knife...Sell it to who you want to. If the 1st guy won't answer your email, email the guy and tell him that if he doesn't respond in the next 2 hours, that you will post that the knife has been sold (with the date and time), and sell it to the guy that is ready to buy it.

I really have a problem with anyone who is involed in a sale/buy/trade who won't answer emails within 12 hours or so.

Just going on what you've posted Ren. . .so here goes:

Possible buyers first e-mail, to you, stated "will consider buying the knife" and is given the monetary value.

Possible buyers second e-mail, to you, agrees to the price but asks for additional info.

The second e-mail is where it gets sticky.

1. In the second e-mail he has agreed to purchase the knife.

2. His asking if the knife comes with the box and papers. . .doesn't indicate that he won't purchase the knife. Unless his e-mail stated that he wouldn't purchase if it doesn't come with the box and papers.

Here's what I think. . .you should wait (based on him stating that he'll purchase the knife ~ second e-mail). But. . .if you haven't heard from the possible buyer, by the time the sweep hand of the clock strikes the 24-hour point from his last e-mail, I'd sell it to the next in line.

Some addition BS. . .

If he is willing to purchase the knife, as indicated by the second e-mail, he should have let you know in his second e-mail what type of payment and when he was sending payment. It would have been nice if he would have provided you with his address.

In addition. . .to assist in closing transactions, where others are waiting in the wings for the same knife, I've always told prospective buyers that they need to give me a firm commitment quickly or the knife would go to the next in line.

Give him another couple hours, around say 6pm, that what you know he is home from work most likley, If you get no response by then, sell it to the other guy. Its a doggy dog world and your selling some great pieces for MONEY. So don't feel bad if you pass someone up.

Sell it to the second guy, pure and simple. I have found you to be a great guy with which to transact business despite your BFC moniker and you have once again gone above and beyond on this deal as well. Just the fact that you care enough to ask this question shows your integrity. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.

I'd say it's the buyer's responsibility to let the seller know what he wants to do. He can say I'd like the knife IF it comes with box and papers, if not thanks anyway, I pass.

If he isn't that clear, you could give anyone at least a 24 hour cycle to get to their e-mail and respond. Some guys have to write from work or from home but not both and can't get back to you until then.

The alternative is what I've seen a few of, and it works for me as a buyer: First "I'll take it" gets it. Browsers and window shoppers shuffle around at your own risk :)

As far as etiquette goes, it's your knife until you agree to accept someone else's money for it. You don't have to sell it to anyone except who you decide. It's not an auction, it's your choice of buyer. First is easiest, but not if you're not comfortable with them.

What the heck does one do??
This one would wait, since the guy agreed to the price (as in, "I'll take it").

I worked a couple of back to back double shifts a few days ago, and was at work for 42 out of 56 hours, and on the road for ~4 more. I always pay fast, ship fast, give a phone #, and keep in contact throughout the deal, but if someone had been waiting for an email from me during that time, they'd have just been...waiting.
People can't always get back to you RIGHT NOW, however inconvenient it may be for you that they don't live on the computer.
Things have come a long way around here in the last couple of years, for people to encourage backing out of a deal after less than one day:rolleyes:

i will give 24 hours, simply because i dont get OL but every 24 hours/or so, so i will go that far..........

48 hrs?? sell to the 2nd guy imho
