Ok, guess I need to take action about the HI Trolls

Spark, I sent you an email with the following but am posting it here as well knowing how busy you are...

I tried to sign up using my bankcard and it was rejected saying it was an invalid number. I have used my bankcard in the past to order knives from 1StopKnifeShop so I don't understand. Aren't bankcards accpted anymore or do I need to use a regular credit card like one of my Master Card's?

Edit:
Never mind. When I entered my number I put a space between the numbers instead of running them all together. The Bot took it just fine then. Case of the dumbass I guess.
I should now be a Basic Member instead of a Registered User.:)

I was actually considering paying so I could post pix, but the idea of being forced just to post doesn't set well with me.

I mean I'd probably do it, but so many people just pop in to post questions and ask which model would be best for them or something I think in the long run it would slow traffic. In a city of 100,000 you are going to have more trouble with people than in a city of 2000. I just think that is the way it is gonna be. If you raise the property tax in that city you may run some people out, or discourage new people from coming in and that will reduce trouble, but it also shrinks the economic base of the city. ;)

Burafan doesn't bother me. If nobody wants to play with him when he comes to play then he just creates imaginary friends to play with himself. As long as nobody wants to jump on him the thread dies out(as others have mentioned)

I agree with you Hollow on the being forced to part.

I just now did the $10 membership because it's the right thing to do...I enjoy my time here.

If circumstances force Spark to make this a paid members only area, I'm already ahead of the game. Now it's a non-issue to me.

One again, the man undermines his own name...Nasty. Yes, it is the right thing to do and ten bucks well spent.

consider it an interactive magazine on Khukuris.

A little strange being 'basic' . Fits well with the low case munk spelling.

Perhaps a rudimentary membership?

Yea, and now you can go to your user CP and type in your sig line so that you will never have to type it in again. I'm glad to see my Bullshido Shoveler back again.:D :p

i put in for a gold membership.

this has become my favourite forum. making it pay... well, frankly it would lose alot of newcomers.

do we want to hurt the innocent to punish to guilty? i don't know.

if we make it pay, won't we be giving into this troll?

these are tough issues. i for one am willing to pay up. it is a family atmosphere, and even though many of us come from hugely differing backgrounds, we all have this mutual respect and care.

but this troll won't stop. we can ignore him, we can ban him, but he'll pop up again and again with various incarnations and pollute this great forum.

so this is one tough issue. if it has come to making this a pay forum, than <sigh> maybe it's gotta be that way.

what do the other forums do with psychopath trolls? i heard of one gaming forum who reported them to some kind of governing body and had him brought up on charges.

I'm probably going to make this forum restricted to paying members.

I just hope we don't have to impose some snobby dress code. :D

OK! OK! It is the right thing to do. If, as Spark said, this forum is losing money, so I want to better support HI Forum.

I get a lot from my interaction the People of The Cantina. I should and want to pay for this whether or not it stops the trolls.

Just signed up for the gold membership. Now, addditionally, I can post some pictures.

Spark?

Of course, your choice. It is your forum set-up (thank you), and you set the rules. I am grateful for its existence, and for the opportunities I've had to meet folks, and buy edged tools. In a funny way, it has helped my life.

But...

Should you implement the change it will never be the same. I know, everything changes, but such a move would not be a modification of the H.I. Forum, it would be a fundamental change in the structure and personality of the Cantina.

Whether it would, or would not address the problem, is arguable. If you need the $, then that is one issue; if you truly believe that the "membership" charge will keep out the riff-raff, I respectfully disagree with you.*

If I were cruising the forums and found that I had to pay $10 to ask a khukri-specific question, I'd keep on cruising. When I came here, it was at Cliff Stamp's suggestion that I inquire of the group about a khuk I'd acquired on eBay. The information would not have been worth $10 to me. That's me.

I don't know to what extent the locked threads and banning are problematic to you. From the outside, it appears that Bill and Rusty, and the general population of the Cantina address most of the issues. Thus it seems self-policing most of the time. The trolls are a rare exception in the tenor of the room. Disagreements are most frequently resolved by common accord, and in many cases, with those at odds with one another coming to understand and respect anothers' viewpoint(s).

Oddly enough, people GROW here--as individuals, as friends, and (godknows) as paupers. :)

It's your bus, you charge (of course) what you want.

But I truly believe it will result in a diminishment of the entire Forum structure, and particularly, in the Cantina.

Be well and safe,

Kis

Wasn't Riff-Raff one of the Characters (and the writer) of the marvelous "Rocky Horror Picture Show."

I hope that we don't implement THEIR dress code!

"Let's do the Time Warp again....."

I humbly suggest that we encourage cantinistas to ante up and support the forum with a paid membership, and advise all to ignore the rowdy drunks puking all over themselves. Let's cary on with what we're about; civilized discussion of things khukuri. And, of course, an occasional foray into philosophy, existentialism, Buddhism, redneck cuisine, UFOs, personal reflections on the meaning of life, navel gazing, things that went wrong with our love lives, and tips on personal grooming. Oh, and I forgot to mention our shared martial art; Bullshido!!!
:)

Well put Kismet! Agree with you on all counts.I had found this forum on a random search for khukris.Would definitely pay now,but as a newcomer I may have moved on.
Yaj.

I don't even remember how I got to this place. I really really don't. If we have to pay to play, then I'll either have to pay or go. No big deal, just another decision to make. One that I suspect I know the answer to.

However I object to being called riff raff. That's Bruise.

I've been a gold member well over a year now. Haven't posted many pics and haven't sold anything. Just wanted to support the forums.

It's not much money. $25 / 365 days = 6.8 cents per day.

And I like to play around in Whine & Cheese and the Pirates Cove once in a while. :D

I pay because I DO really enjoy this place and feel it is worth supporting. :)
I have made friends here, and learned more about khuks and knives than I can describe. I will keep paying. It is far better than any magazine subscription I have invested in! :D

I second that, AA.

I don't think a pay-to-post requirement will solve our local troll problem, though. The cantina is what it is because of Uncle Bill and the shared philosophy of the folks who gather here. It's this very philosophy that our pathetic little visitor exploits.

We could easily eliminate the problem by changing the forum philosophy, but that would also change the nature of the cantina that we so enjoy.

The sad fact is, the cantina's atmosphere has already changed dramatically because of this situation. Newcomers to this forum were once welcomed with open arms. This has been so exploited that now I'm reluctant to even acknowledge a new name until I've checked him out thoroughly. And I'm far less likely to allow myself to be drawn into discussions these days because of the crass manipulations that have occured since December. Out of respect for Uncle Bill and Rusty I continue to bite my tongue the best I can; but sometimes it's easier for me to just go away than to endure the stress of not indulging the need for cracking some skull when it's appropriate. I suspect I'm not alone in these sentiments.

I'll never hesitate to encourage members to upgrade, but I think all the folks here including the mods are doing the best that can be expected given the circumstances. I say we stay the course, this too shall pass.

I had problems paying by credit card a month back. Tried again and went thru, it says. Oh, well.

Done already - oh my!

QUOTE]

I totally agree. To me, it makes zero sense to hit EVERYONE in the wallet because of the actions of a few, plus it will have zero effect on trolls. In my mind, the people who consistently respond to trolls (you know who you are) and continue, relentlessly, to fan the troll's flames are as guilty as the troll and should be banned right along with him. Trolls don't bother anyone if they get no response.
