Ok, guess I need to take action about the HI Trolls

I'm already paid up, but I'd hate to lose a large part of our community just because of one jackass.

I agree. Don't want to wreck what makes the HI Forum special because of one persistent jerk. And Spectre is right; this guy would pay $100 if he could spoil our day, or otherwise suck up the positive energy at this site. It's what gets him off and gives his pathetic life meaning.

I have to go on record and saying that I think the heart is in the right place but that this would not be good for the forum. I have also seen several regular registered users swing buy, nail 2 or 3 UBBB's, and then never be seen again, so I think this would also hurt HI's business.

It won't solve the problem and will restrict the input that makes this site special, and all for what? One pissant named BF.

Just my .02.5¢ worth.

Thanks,

Norm

For those who asked(and because I do'nt think it was answered), this would not be the first pay to play forum, as the for sale sections of course are to post(And yes, I know I need to redo my knifemaker membership, had other things come up that took that money, gotta help family first), and there is another that's pay to read or post, least last I checked it. SO this isn't something new started for us.

Don't think it'll work, but it's better than doing nothing.

:)

Actually, everone ignoring them is the closest to "doing nothing" one can do.

I tried to pay, to upgrade,
2-3 times, days, weeks, last month,
thru different access pages.
Kept telling me I don't live here.............

So it's ante up a saw buck or no more doing the Time Warp (5.3 MB, .MP3) with all you freaks? Keep your fingers crossed ...y'all may lose more than one troll this time around :(

Dean?

Actually, we didn't want to tell you, but this is a dream. You are actually a savage beast living in a wooded forest, evolving to conscious thought.

edit: Duh, what other kind of forest is there?

Also Dean...in that dream, you just explained your payment dilemma to a smaller, less furry animal, one day destined to wipe out your kind and eventually listen to John Kerry talk about "his military record".

a plaid membership?
does that mean we all have to wear kilts?

yeah and knee high socks with kardas in the tops!

With lace up shoes, and hats and blow bagpipes.

Think we can get a special run of Claymores?

I don't post here much but I enjoy the forum and I 'd be willing to pay to remain a part of it. I'ts a shame that it has come to this. This forum has always made me think of Spider Robinsons "Callahans Crosstime Saloon " series of books. The kind of place where just about anyone can pull up a stool at the bar and not feel too out of place or unwelcome. Unless of course your an intergalactic cockroach bent on the annhilation of the entire planet.

If it has to be pay to play then so be it. I don't think it will stop the particular roach that has been infesting this place (and whom I suspect has already posted here on this thread under another of his many false faces) but one can hope.

Just as a possible idea, would there be any way to filter new members to the forum? I mean anyone can pony up ten bucks but would it be a good idea to have anyone who wanted to become part of the forum go through say a sponsership through a known and established member? Any opinions?

That'd sure put a crunch on the poor guy living in the middle of nowhere!

Of course, your choice. It is your forum set-up (thank you), and you set the rules. I am grateful for its existence, and for the opportunities I've had to meet folks, and buy edged tools. In a funny way, it has helped my life.

But...

Should you implement the change it will never be the same. I know, everything changes, but such a move would not be a modification of the H.I. Forum, it would be a fundamental change in the structure and personality of the Cantina.

Whether it would, or would not address the problem, is arguable. If you need the $, then that is one issue; if you truly believe that the "membership" charge will keep out the riff-raff, I respectfully disagree with you.*

If I were cruising the forums and found that I had to pay $10 to ask a khukri-specific question, I'd keep on cruising. When I came here, it was at Cliff Stamp's suggestion that I inquire of the group about a khuk I'd acquired on eBay. The information would not have been worth $10 to me. That's me.

I don't know to what extent the locked threads and banning are problematic to you. From the outside, it appears that Bill and Rusty, and the general population of the Cantina address most of the issues. Thus it seems self-policing most of the time. The trolls are a rare exception in the tenor of the room. Disagreements are most frequently resolved by common accord, and in many cases, with those at odds with one another coming to understand and respect anothers' viewpoint(s).

Oddly enough, people GROW here--as individuals, as friends, and (godknows) as paupers. :)

It's your bus, you charge (of course) what you want.

But I truly believe it will result in a diminishment of the entire Forum structure, and particularly, in the Cantina.

Be well and safe,

Changing the forum and possibly impacting on Uncle Bill’s business over a persistent mosquito, smacks of the Philippines pulling out of Iraq, and knuckling under to the terrorists. Actually, a little amateur sleuth work would probably unmask Weaseldickfan. Forumites who have been here long enough to remember when he first surfaced, may remember an incident that got someone disgruntled or some other link to his real identity. Weaseldickfan may also be still posting under a “real moniker” and, God forbid, may even be a known regular with a weird alter-ego. He may even engage in three-way conversations with himself. If someone had the time and patience, some basic pattern analysis on his posts might turn up some interesting revelations, or at least narrow the field. Since he knows who Bura is, and something about HI khuks, he is also probably a past HI customer. I think the best approach offered is to ignore, and delete, known posts. Attention is what he craves. If we let him get to us, he’s won! And he's won the war if we take action that impacts adversely on Uncle Bill or the forum. Unfortunately, I fear threads like this probably just fan the flames more, and provide a sexual release for him, in one of the only ways he can attain one.

yep I hope that some other solution can be found, I hate for one jerk t ruin something that so many treasure.

I have to admit that I really don't get it. What is it about trolls that draws so much attention. Are they consuming a vast amount of bandwidth? Are they using language and images inappropriate for our forums? Are really they upsetting the other members? Irrespective of their chronological age, I just tend to ignore them as pathetic little kids looking for attention.

If the objective is to support these forums then we should hold a membership drive and sell enough subscriptions to meet the budget requirement. Just let us know what you need and we will gladly help you to pull it together. But, I would hope that we can meet the number without having to make our broader family feel unwelcomed. 99.00% of our new members are excellent contributors with meaningful things to say. Why would we want to send these people away?
