My point was not that this is all you look at, nor do you ignore your own experience. However if a maker promotes a certain level of performance, you can't blame the user for expecting it. If the level of performance described is high, it will obviously be an attraction, and in fact in extreme cases could be the dominant one.
This doesn't have to mean hype, and isn't limited to durability. For example, I have recently been discussing high RC hardness with a maker (68-71 RC), for light use knives. I am interested because of positive comments made by another maker, promotion if you will.

How a knife is promoted by the maker is of no concern to me, or many other users that I know.
