OK, now I'm hooked... but do I need an Izula?

All right, after all the help I hot on this forum (please refer to http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=648676)
I've decided to order an RC6. This will be my first RAT Cutlery knife, and my first fixed blade.

However, do I really need an Izula as a companion? I mean, I have several Spyderco Militaries and Paramilitaries, so why would I need an Izula? Please notice I say *need* ... I know I WANT one, but do I need it, or I have its function covered by a Military?

Thanks again for all the good advice I got.

Do you need it? No. Will you end up liking the RC-6 to the point at which you'll regret not getting the Izula? Probably. Will you end up with an Izula eventually? Yes. :D :D :D

Well today I'm going to my sister's house to help my B-I-L out with some yard work and a little bit of plumbing. I have a para-military (CPM-D2 foliage green) but I'm taking my Izula with me instead. I know if we get working and he asks to borrow a knife I wont hesitate or worry about handing him my Izula, (although I did gift him one not to long ago so he may have it with him). I have seen what he has done to one of his folders, a cheap S&W, so I doubt I will let him use my para anytime soon.

Great rationalization!

I'm dying to pull the trigger on the Izula. Maybe I need to get a little more creative in my analysis...:D

No, you don't "need" an Izula. A folder will work just fine as a companion.

With that out of the way, I've come to prefer a small fixed blade like the Izula over a folder. I have a Manix and a G-10 Endura 4, I love them and carry them in certain situations but a small fixed is just going to be stronger and you don't have to concern yourself with dirt and sand and pocket lint clogging up the mechanisms.

Also, as silly as it might sound, if we use history as a judge, the RAT's are a bit contagious. You will most likely end up with an Izula in the long run and you can just save shipping and get it with your 6.

I have way more knives than any sane person has need for.I have two Izulas' in route though.I never said I was sane!

Fixed it.

The good thing about the Izula is it is a $50 must have. The other must haves will cost you in the $100 range :D

In all honesty, I have to say that Ghostwolf did not "need" the Izula he swiped from stock.. to "test" of course.
However, once he got it and used it and played with it, it replaced the comparable blade he normally carried, as the RC-4 replaced its predecessor with him. "Need" maybe not, but it has proven to be a better blade, so that is something to think about.

For 90% of what I used a folder for is now done with an Izula. I have too many scars on the back of my fingers (collected over a long period I must add!), to trust folders, of any make, too much. And I like 'em (Izula's), so there is a certain amount of emotive thought there as well.

YES
They were made for each other :D

I bought the izula while buying my RC-6 and I never used any fixed blade under 4 inches and neck knifes are not my cup of tea. But I had to try it out. Been a couple of weeks now and I love that Izula, really I love it its just a great small blade, guess what I prefer carrying this than a folder, at least the Izula doesn't need to be cleaned inside and I'm not afraid to use it in dirt and mud and I have great folders but I'm just satisfied with the Izula alone, the blade shape and the flat grind is my perfect combination and RAT's blade steel and coating just does the job perfectly, wrap it in 550 and its your perfect small size blade.

I was just astonished by the Izula (of course the RC-6 also) and just fell in love.

+100 , I left at around 3:30 and returned home at about 9:30 from helping my B-I-L. I was under my sister's house in a dirt crawl space that might have been 2 foot tall helping change out some water lines. It was dusty, dirty, and muddy work, I am extremely glad I had a small fixed blade on me. After we finished up under the house we did some landscaping. I got home and took a shower with my Izula and I just now got done putting an almost scary sharp edge on it. :D hopefully the little bit of ibuprofen I took will get in soon.

hmm.. you really do love that Izula dont you? You should get a pink one if youre gunna shower with one. :)

OP. Do you need an Izula? No. Will you get one anyways? Yes.

I didnt need probably the last 10 knives I bought, but I got um anyways. I just got a Becker BK7 and now I dont really need an RC6... but I'm still gunna get one. We're all sick I tell you... SICK! Stick around.. there's no cure for the RAT flu. You'll catch it soon enough.

i think its nice having a nice fixed blade that is perfect for edc. so for me, yeah, i need an izula cuz well. its my edc. just pull the trigger youre guaranteed to love it

I've been carrying folders for ages (a VIC type folder from age ten on, and others followed). Now that my favourite folders are not legal for edc any more, I got the Izula, and I don't miss a thing. It is so lightweight and offers so many options to fix it to your belt or gear, once you get used to it being there you barely notice it being there.
To me this is just as edc as a Boker Subcom folder, but way more robust.

I almost always have the Izula on me, unless of course my wife has snatched it first. But it doesn't replace either my folder or my SAK, never will. Great knife, wickedly sharp, prefect size for most cutting chores, but if someone wants to borrow my blade, they are getting my $15 Schrade, NOT my Rat. Period. I might tease them, let them think that some day they will be a good enough friend to be trusted with my Izula, but it aint gonna happen.. :) Of course if they HAVE TO HAVE a fixed blade, well then I reach in my desk draw and pull out a Mora.

My Izula, get your own! :)
