All our fancy-schmancy tactical matter separators in our pockets and I'll bet GOOD MONEY...that most of us have that old beat-up POS somewhere REAL HANDY for those jobs that our STATE-OF-THE-ART blades were designed to do but..........we don't wanna skridge em all up.

I do.

Made in China. My bonsai knife. Also paint scraper, dirt thrower, fence sticker, mini-hammer, and prybar.

While my "precious" Fallkniven sits in my pocket absorbing the sweat from the work its crummy cousin is doin.

:( ;) :D

Well I won't call either a POS, but when hard abusing work needs to get done I grab my old 2nd hand Ka-bar or Buck 110. I don't see the reason behind having POS's around when there are plenty inexpensive, solid knives out there.

For the time it takes to get the edge I have on my 110, I ain't gonna use it for what I use the "bonsai" knife for.

:)

I have a couple of folders that were under $10.00 that I use at work. Neither is really a crappy knife, but they are as low quality as I will put in my pocket.

I have a big collection of tools in my basement so usually I don't have to use my knives for any heavy duty work. I have a couple utility razors (with the replacement blades), etc. When I was younger and I knew I was going to go out in the woods with my friends or something and wanted to take a knife that I knew was going to take a beating I'd take my Cold Steel SRK. Tough knife. :) I still have the SRK around and I would grab it if I was going to have to use it for heavy duty purposes. It's pretty ugly by now and I've reprofiled it to make it a better cutter.

Springfield M6 Scout Knife - It lives in the workshop 'cause no one in their right mind would wanna carry that crap compared to the BMs, Spydies, and Kershaws we have kicking around in my house. However, it's sheer convenience of being RIGHT there so often means it gets a surprising amount of use.

I have a few of those $5 Chinese knives that I use when fishing from a pier so in case I drop it and it goes in the water, no great loss. I wouldn't want to lose a Victorinox even tho they are usually less than $20.

The cheap knife cuts shrimp and fishing line fine.

Who has a crap knife that gets used alot?

About half the guys on my dept.

Right now, theres alot of guys using a $9.00 tanto switchblade, that a guy gets at his local hardware store.......

I have had thoughts of using cheapo crap knives - and confess to having bought my fair share of such - but they end up not being used.

As others have mentioned there are plenty of inexpensive knives of quality out there that one can almost always use a "good" knife.

Two of my most used cheapo knives have been -

a fixed blade Falcon by KJ Eriksson - Swedish Mora -
Falcon_S.jpg

This got lots of rough outdoors use including digging out arrows firmly embedded in trees. The knife used to be pointier - but the tip got bent - and I reground and sharpened it to the current point.
A model very similar to this one can be bought for about $10 (model #545)

My EDC for over 6 years -
First_Waiter82.jpg

Victorinox Economy Line "Waiter"
Again lots of use since it was the knife in my pocket - like repairs to cheap car needing heaps of attention - including making temporary exhaust pipe repairs out of soda can and hose clips.........

Even the current full priced Victorinox Waiter (US model # 53891) can be found for less than $9.............

At home, in the kitchen and on my table are the Victroinox 3.25" parers -
thin and very sharp blades that get lots of kitchen (wood handle) and miscellaneous usage respectively -
the plastic handled ones can easily be found for $4......

Of course one cannot miss the Opinel - the #8 is the most popular size - I prefer the stainless steel model - these can be found for about $8 - and they are sharp workhorses......

Guilty.

I keep a made in Taiwan Fury 17050 knife in my tool box for the real grunge work and I have another knife that I use and carry frequently ( a super knife) for all the kinds of jobs I'd never use my good EDC for. I have also found it handy to use the beater knife as I call them as the ones I give to other people when they ask me 'do you have a knife I can borrow?' That way I don't get my BP up when they f*** up my edge!

I have a SE Spyderco Delica which is heavily abused. I wouldn't call it a POS, though it's not that expensive.

I'm not going to buy a POS, even if I need a knife I can trash. If I'm going to abuse my knife, I want one that will hold up under stress, one that doesn't put my fingers at risk. I use a Benchmade 705 as an around - the - house beater. It's ugly, because I beat the crap out of it, but it still works great.

Just like JDBLADE said:
My Leatherman does most of the nasty blade-work.

Of course, the Leatherman Super Tool 200 is not "crap", but the knife is crappy compared to my other folders.

Allen.

My mystery steel knife that I got as a gift for being in a wedding party. This weekend it truly earned it's award as the ultimate beater knife while plastering the walls of my condo. The knife is covered in plater but still did the grunt work I need ed it to perfrom.

I'll use some reject blades from the shop to tear stuff in there, but for the most part, I'm with Nathan S -- I buy 'em to use them. The more I pay for them, the better they should perform for those everyday tasks (in theory) :D

I use one of those buck fixed blade knives for work around the house. Keeps a pretty good edge. I is not a junky knife, by any means, but it isn't one of my Mike Snody fixed blades either. It has turned out to be my favoite beater.

I got 2 Rough riders a couple of weeks ago, one ( Doctors style) sits on my desk as a " letter opener" the other ( trapper ) is used for simple cutting chores.( Cutting sandwiches etc) So far, they both are working well. I dont know if I would call them "cheap" knives. The fit and finish is decent for $ 5.00 knives They sharpen easy and havent dulled real bad yet. I am kinda impressed with them so far.
I also purchased some spyderco Enduras customer returns, they had busted tips and clips. They cost me for $ 5.00 a piece a while back.
I use them working around the house, all kinds of rough cutting chores.
Worse thing I cut was roofing shingles with them. They hold up real real well, I cant praise spydercos enough. And for 5 buck I beat the s%#t out of them.
Good knife hunting
Jack

You're right, most of the "knife lovers" I know wouldn't use their expensive high quality blades even to open a letter! :D But I also know a couple of guys in the army that can prove if what the manufacturer says is close or far from reality in many brands & models. :barf:
As I said, you are right: almost all of us have a "cheap friend" always at hand to perform the hard tasks. It doesn't mean that cheaper is bad quality; for example I have a SOG Mini-Clip & a Victorinox Soldier.
