Okay, fess up....who has a CRAP knife...that gets USED A LOT?

I use a SWAK for all of the crappy utility jobs around the house- the Mora clipper version or the Mora M2000.

They're cheap enough that I have six - one in my car, one in each of my 2 BOB's, one in my toolbox, one in my repair kit, and one in my desk.

The blade may be cheaply priced, but it is by no means a crappy performer. That Sandvik steel is a great cutter, and the plastic handles are extremely comfortable and good insulators (this is important for winter use up here in Canada).

I'va also been known to hack in the garden with a large Cold Steel Voyager tanto....

Though I have a few POS knives in a drawer somewhere, when I need a knife that can work hard, I grab one designed to handle it.

A POS is a POS no matter the price. A good knife may or may not be pretty. I have good performing knives that I don't mind beating up, since they were not designed as art.

I have a real POS that I use quite alot. It's a Dollar Store chinese copy of a Stanley knife.I bought it for my Wife to open boxes with the thought of if it gets stolen who cares? Well, she didn't like it ,too big, she'd like a plastic box cutter to replace the one that she broke, add nauseum.I got her a Super-Knife which she loves and started using the POS at my work bench.I've cut dry wall, string, boxes, wire, heated it up and cut para-cord,you name it.The blade wont retract(factory defect) but for $1.00 plus tax I can't beat it!tom.

My EDC for over 6 years -

Victorinox Economy Line "Waiter"
Again lots of use since it was the knife in my pocket - like repairs to cheap car needing heaps of attention - including making temporary exhaust pipe repairs out of soda can and hose clips.........

Even the current full priced Victorinox Waiter (US model # 53891) can be found for less than $9.............

I own them both.Great knives.tom. :D

My EDC is a cheap $10 gerber winchester. It's done well and hasn't let me down. Speaking of cheap knives anyone know anything about Queen Cutlery? I've seen some of their light hunters for around 40 smackers. Look to be decent and D2 steel. Any thoughts or experience. Just for the record I've had good experiences with low priced production knives and I can't bring myself to pay 150+ for a blade. Maybe one of these days but no time soon. My .02!

Nope, I have SAKs in all of my briefcases/messenger bags/backpacks. I also have a Stanley boxcutter in my desk at work to open boxes. That's as close to POS as I get.

which I got from AC the better part of ten years ago. I have no idea what kind of stainless it is. Doesn't hold a great edge but the thing doesn't have a bad shape. 4" drop point with lots of belly, maybe 3/32" thick full flat grind. I use it to cut carpet, break down boxes, misc. light but dirty work. Cheap wood scales but I glued and pinned 'em, so I don't they're going anywhere. The only reason I keep it is the blade shape.

I have a POS Wenger SAK that has seen lots of pocket time and been used plenty. The scales are long gone, the locking mechanism doesn't work at all, and it has the worlds cheesiest homemade serrations. I really hate it. :barf: Yet I use it. Makes no sense.

I have the Queen 4180 in D2 and Micarta grips. It's smaller than it looks but is a fantastic deal. This knife holds an edge *much* longer than some knives I have that cost 10x more. Great buy! I did have to thin out my edge also, but it was about 10 - 15 min job on my Edgepro. Once thinned, D2 sharpens very easily - no harder than many other steels.

bear ninja boot knife its a single edged fixed blade with about a 3 1/2" blade and only cost about 20bux

I use my SAK 10X more than any other knife I own. It's always on me and it doesn't freak people out. I don't consider SAKs to be POSs, but I have spent much more on knives I use much less.

In the garage I use a knife I made in 10th grade metal shop, which makes it an antique. It has about a 5" blade, full tang and been beat to death, but keeps on cutting. I have one very cheap edc, a Master SS with about a 2-1/4" blade. I know I paid less than $10 for it, but it keeps an edge like a razor and it locks up solid...well pretty solid. It's just so handy and does most anything I ask of it. I've stuck it in my pocket for at least 5 years on and off. Total original cost of both combined, about $10.

I've got this $2 spyderco knockoff that someone gave me years ago, and it's been the hacker of the line up. I've cut fiberglass, concrete board, scored metal, and done all sorts of nasty things that would make me cry if I had to do them with one of my real knives...

This is a very intresting discussion indeed!
Some of you have put what you have used your knives for but I'd be intrested to know what your ideas of dirty jobs etc include.

Thanks.

My dirty jobs include cutting carpet, cardboard boxes, stripping off the wire coating off of fencing material, edge and floor paint clean-up on cement and tile, as well as using it to cut open abrasive materials like fertilizer bags, rip rap landscaping material, and nylon rope.

Basically any job where you would think twice about ruining the finish off of your "good" EDC's.

Everyone should have a beater knife.

All of my POS's work for me 24/7............by helping gravity to hold down an old flap-sided vinyl briefcase that sits in a corner of my bedroom............and I'm proud to say that not a one of them has EVER failed at their task!!!!!
