Old file prices

Well, apparently Cooper tools is telling Mike something different then they're telling me....doesn't surprise me. I've been oil quenching the steel from files, which I believed to be 1095, and they've all come out great.
Best bet, if at all possible, is to buy "known" steel. Working with Mystery Metal is no fun. :thumbdn:

I know a 15 year old who is buying an anvil with paper rough money, and a young service man who is hoping for enough of a tax return to get contact and idler wheels for his home built grinder. To these guys a piece of free steel is a treasure.

If you forge you are not limited by the shape of the file.

I understand both of your points! My first knife was filed out of a Nicholson file, and I started it when I was about 14

It took 4 years to finish that one! I did stock removal for about 7 years I think after that one was done, then I disovered what heat could do for me freeing me from the limitations of stock shape!

When that 15 year old gets the anvil and a suitable heatsource, send me an email reminding me of this, and I'll send you a care package to pass on of a stick of Aldo's fine steel, and some purpleheart for handle making. Any kid working that hard for a goal deserves surprise rewards.
