Old Friends Friday

There’s a song about that…

I missed out on all those experiences. I only discovered my grandfather’s knife a couple of years ago, when my dad, who was starting to show signs of dementia already, produced it from somewhere and showed it to me. It then sat on a shelf next to the boat book in my picture above, until he passed too.

I also seem to remember me and Jer discussing that already…
Nothing wrong with your memory. Yup, I used to carry a duplicate SAK and casually slip it into an urn thickly planted with flowers on the courthouse steps.
Finding it again was still a subtle process, but sometimes not invisibly subtle.

Yeah - there was a period between the implementation of post- 911 security measures, and land records being available online, when I used to sometimes have to do deed research in person at the courthouse. The bottom knife in that picture got stashed in the planter out front more than once, when I got there and realized I still had it in my pocket…

I seem to remember there being thick evergreen shrubs in there back then - I also seem to remember me and Jer discussing that already…
I have thought about doing the same if neccessary Tom. I did notice a couple of likely hiding spots near the Old Bailey, though there's also an abundance of both CCTV cameras and patrolling cops 🫣

I like to think about the quiet times when Grandaddy was “in a bind” and his pocket knife solved the problem. Perhaps he had to fashion a washer out of a piece of leather for his breaker points, or something like that. A story nobody will ever know, and yet his situation called for improvisation and he had the tool for the job.

Our friend Carl J jackknife has probably written a story about it :)

I bought this set when I was in Lansing twenty years ago. The guy charged me the store sale price on the box. Something like 30 down from 60.

Self sharpening kitchen knives, not to be kept too near a food prep area, lest we ingest steel shavings. I hope it wasn't the best idea some marketing genius ever had.

I have a set of 7 stainless IXL kitchen knives I've owned since 1981, but the same knives were also sold with Joseph Rodgers and Wilkinson's Sword blade etches. I'm not sure who owns their mark now, but sadly, it tends to be used on cheap, plastic-handled, Chinese-made Pruners that you see on sale at garden centres :(
