That latest display photoshop looks really terrific!! With matching stain the insert looks like it came from the factory that way.

Thanks as always for the photos on page one. Your knife collection is stunning!

Outstanding knives. Really great looking bone.

I should send you all my knives to clean and photograph. Then I can use them to post on here. ;)

I really like the idea of the shadow box shelves set into the existing display case. If I may offer a suggestion, perhaps a little intentional " distressing" of the new shelf would help it blend with old one a little better. Please ignore the horrible cell pics.

Primble Sir.
I like the Primble cabinet the way it is- man that thing has what you call Patina.
I think the magnet idea is good- but the the shelves are a good idea also - I just think that if you get a bigger slippie- say a Grandaddy Barlow or something like that it will have to be excluded because of the of pre- sized shelves.
Personally I like the cabinet at its best with no shelves and I would investigate the magnet theory a bit more- but hey in saying this my friend- everything you have is a notch up than what I have so it's easy to speak from the cheap seats.

Also I must answer your question on my opinion on the Primbles a bit back- I love the colours and different scales added ~ but in saying that it so so hard to beat the bone on those first two knives- they are world class knives.
Primbles always seemed to outwork their knives to the most excellent Cutler firms- If I was closer to sources - I would have a huge Primble collection- they are impressive knives- a great company name in the world of knives.

Thank you Woodrow and how many - I could be busy for a long time ?? Your photos are nice and so are your knives. I enjoy your posts.

Good advice - I am familiar with distressing.

Thank you Duncan and I agree - the Patina will be left intact and I am proud to say that I have made a decision!!

Decision made:

I have chosen the ideas of Waynorth and Clutchcarter (Mark) - Mark has very kindly offered to have his Primble display board professionally scanned and he will send me the file to print. I can print it on heavy weight matte professional paper, seal it, and glue it to the steel. I can then use the magnets to hold the knives in place. That will allow me to keep the cabinet as is, patina wise, and I think it will be just what I wanted - something to be proud of! The finished old cabinet should look original when finished. I will post photos here when all is finished and the knives are in place.

Thank you everyone and one last question - where would be the best place to look for the 10-12 gauge steel ?

12 Ga galvanized sheet

Remember what Charlie said if you use magnets "It works best with open knives, point up. That's the only limitation."

The main blade will be what the magnet uses to hold the knife in place. With that said, if your knives have no half-stop, there is a constant "load" on the back spring.

I worked on the Dogleg Jack Primble last night and this morning - knocking down some of the high luster finish. The blades are now satin like and I tried a new TOP SECRET experimental finish on the bolsters and shield - not quite satin-like and maybe I will call it my "Primble Works" semi gloss finish. :D I also used the same finish on the Primble HJ bolsters and shield:

I am amazed of the quality of the dogleg jack knife. It has wonderful contours and the bolster work is phenomenal - lots of angles and then a flaired shoulder on the top bolsters. It surely taxed the cutlers skill, IMO. The dogleg jack was most generously gifted to me by Old & in the Way - I really love this knife and it might have taken over top spot in my Primble collection, although I won't say that real loud because I don't like to favor my children! :D

I couldn't find an emoticon for 'breathless anticipation'... :D can't wait to see the finished display case, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it filled up. ;)

Lookin' good Primble! Man, I love those oldies!

If you use several small 'rare earth' magnets, would that not hold the knife horizontally?

The magnets are quite strong, and after the knives have been stored there, they will easily pick up paper clips. I don't know if a magnetic knife is a liability unless you are probing for mines, though. :hopelessness:

WOW!!!
Mark -thats is such a neat thing to do for our mate Prim's, and what a important part for Primbles Cabinet - thats just awesome!!!!!
