Old John Primble Knives & Belknap Hardware History

OK - here is/was one of my ideas - this cell phone pic of a few Case displays I made out of poplar and painted to match the knife display below it:

They are about 1.75 inches deep. The cheaper cell phone lens makes them look like they are hanging crooked ,but, they are not really that way.

I could take the old Primble display and cut the back side of it down to make it a wall display, then stain the cuts to match the exterior.

Hi Primble,

I am of course envious of your knives and photography skills right along with everyone else, but what compels me to post
is your furniture. I have a dresser and matching chest of drawers that looks exactly like yours although yours appears to
be in slightly better shape. My parents bought them second-hand back in the 50s and I really love them. I just wanted to
say that I do admire yours.

I want to thank Mark (clutchcarter) for getting the board graphics made for me.

He must have run over half of Louisville to get this done. 👍:)

I did run into a couple problems with the print he mailed to me - it was about an inch too wide for the cabinet, however,

Mark had included a thumb drive that contained the large file. Since I knew I would have to re-print, I decided to desaturate the original file to try to make the print look a little washed out and a little more antique, to match my older cabinet. I desaturated fifty percent and printed on heavy weight matte photo paper and then trimmed the paper to the board size of 16" by 13", actually it turned out to be 12.5" wide because my large format printer is not as precise connected to my Mac. I can do borderless printing on it if I connect to my older PC and get the 13" width.

So this is the test print and I removed the glass in front to cut glare. I thought some might like to see that progress is being made.

Thank you again Mark!!! 👍:)

Wow Rob, I thought the cases were the same, my board measures 14" X 17". I'm glad you have the capability to work with the file! Looks like it's going to work out just fine, can't wait to see the final product.

Curse you Primble... or rather, my wallet does... there are a few ebay sellers happier this monday.

I will be once they arrive. :D

Very nice!

Looks like a winner!!!

Thank you for the comments Dan, Glenn, and Mark!! I guess we just assumed the two cases were identical in size Mark.

I think we were both just so hopeful of finding someone to do it, well maybe that small detail escaped us.

I think it will work out just as good or better the way it turned out - the file you sent was wonderful.:)

I was thinking of maybe doing two versions, the second being an antiqued craquelure finish ??

I found a Serpentine 2 blade jack (702), and a 4 blade congress (711) on the way... both auctions I didn't expect to win, but there we go. Apologies if anyone here was bidding against.

Possibly a third (undisclosed), but that one's not over yet - so we'll see this afternoon.

Add those to the Schrade Cutco Bullet end jack, and walnut handled sharpfinger I found... and I should really stop soon.

Not me bidding - no bids on anything lately, but, I could probably think of a few others?:confused::thumbup::D

You can send that Bullet end Jack to me for inspection if you like. :D

Hi all from Australia, I only collect Schrade knives. However, Schrade did make some Old Timers for Primble in the early 1970s
I have a number of these Old Timers.

Thank you for showing them - I believe Schrade made quite a few of the John Primble knives.:)

It was a good day when the postal service came by. Terrible cell phone pictures and my desk lamp. I'll take better pictures when we get back from our camping trip. Walk and talk is great on all of them. There is a full length hairline crack in the rear scale on the Schrade, but it seems stable. They just need a little cleanup. Now I just need the scout knife to be delivered.

Both the Primbles have tang stamp:
JOHN PRIMBLE
BELKNAP
HDW. & MFG. CO.

With model no's 702 (serpentine) and 711 (congress).

The Schrade is marked on both blades (it's a heavy beast, with plenty of snap in the springs):
SCHRADE
CUT.CO.
WALDEN.N.Y.

Now, pics! I apologize for the quality. The two Primbles are very slim, especially compared with the Schrade. Similar in size to the new Norfolk Whittler.

Congress has the "Finest Steel" blade etch.

Very very nice Primbles and Schrade - thank you for posting these!!!:)

I finally finished the old John Primble Display today. The slide in display board was replaced with a steel board and the Primble graphics were printed onto matte heavyweight photo paper. It was then sealed and glued to the steel display. I purchased some Neodymium magnets and the old John Primble knives are all magnetically attached to the display. The first picture is a close up picture of the old knives on the board and the glass removed for clarity:

The second picture is a mid range shot of the display, located in it's new spot in my cupboard:

THE ORIGINAL STORY:

Primble has been my nickname for the past 51 years. My uncle, a big, tall and soft spoken farmer, gave it to me when I was nine years old.
It all started at a country store that had Primble knives. I was always walking down the dirt road, probably a mile or so down the road from the store, in a quest to see the Primble knives. This would have been in the 1960's.
