old khukuri with green stuff...

It could also have been Cosmoline preservative/protectant. To get that off, I usually warm it up with a hair drier, then wipe or brush it away.

My eyes are not much good anymore and I've played with the pix so it's hard to say for sure but it looks like horn to me that's been finished lengthwise and then polished.

I'd bet horn, too. In the first picture, the grain looks very fine, and there's lighter, almost translucent parts. Both of these seem horn-like.

Bootfasa, don't apologize for outbidding me. It was an honorable auction transaction. I don't think you "sniped" anyone on it. I already have a khuk that is very similar to yours. You got a very good deal.

Again, it looks like the current service blade of the British Gurkha troops. It's a decent khuk, and should give you good service.

You seem to have caught "the virus" already, wanting another one.
I suggest you get a 15" AK from Uncle. You will see a big difference in fit and finish to start with. The AK will also be better for heavier chopping and splitting, without being too heavy to carry on your belt.

I think you would agree that you have gotten a remarkable amount of help here with a blade that is not even an HI product. I see Uncle himself has added some helpful commentary. This shows what kind of folks frequent this forum...the best.:)

Comparing yours with the handle of my 15"AK. I'd say you have a horn handled Khuk. Mine still has all of the new shine to it. So I wouldn't drop it while chopping with it wore a pair of military style flight gloves.(no sweat or acid marks)

Welcome to the Cantina Doug.. Stick around you'll enjoy this bunch of guys. A little crazy but we have fun anyway.

Say, this feller wanting another Khuk already sounds like some KV to me. Just wait till he gets a hold of one of the HI's.

Again welcome. and Semper Fi!!!:D :D

I wouldnt worry too much about sweat damaging horn handles. The neat thing about horn, and one of the reasons it is traditional handle material in many places is because it likes to be handled. The sweat and juices from your hand actually help keep the horn in good shape. Anyways its great excuse to go and play with your khuk.
