"Old Knives"

Nice ones Glenn and Mike!
Here is another I picked up from Roger. Buffalo Cutlery Co. stockman with a punch. Only time I have seen the diamond shield used in a knife of this era other than on a Shapleigh. This one I believe was made by Schrade, kind of a transition jigging pattern between the old pick bone and the peach seed.

Buffalo bought a lot of seconds off of Schrade Cut Co and then shaved the tangs and put their own tang stamp on (or had it done). It's very possible that yours (and Charlie's beauty) started out as Shapleigh contract knives.

Both of them are stunning!

Buffalo News 1916!! The above EJ is later than 1916!!
A stunner there Charlie!!

I thought I had read that somewhere but can't remember where I read it. That could be the case here that some knives intended for Shapleigh were rebranded under Buffalo.

It's always great to hear these tidbits of History, Eric!! Are you still involved with that Museum project??

Did they remove the DE from the shields, or turn the shields over, or ....?

Cal, they probably just ground the "DE" off. It was a fairly shallow stamp and the shields sat proud on the jigged bone handles so it would have taken very little effort. Couldn't flip the shields as they were pinned.

Charlie, yes I'm still involved at the museum. Actually headed over there this weekend to do some re-arranging of the displays. We lost our President and his wonderful wife to the damned covid this past winter so it's definitely with some sadness that we head in to this new season.

Eric

PS - Just noticed the posts about the ghost "E", that would likely confirm that the shield was ground down a bit to remove the marks. there was usually a border around the "DE" as well. Had to be fairly conservative with the grinding so they didn't remove the head on the pin.

Sorry about your loss, Eric!! Puts more burden on your shoulders, I assume!!
5 members of my extended family got Covid in the last 1 1/2 years - mild cases because they were vaccinated. The 6th (my Bro) was not vaxxed, and got a bad case, still suffering after a year!! :(
