"Old Knives"

Empire Saw Trapper; note the fine set on the teeth!! Tony Bose thought it might be a surgeon's knife from WWI!! 😲 View attachment 1976037
I like the swedge on the main blade, how it has almost no plunge. It looks like the long pull goes into the swedge, so is open on that end. That is a design element I would like to see make a comeback! Really good looking.

Stunning Empire examples Charlie.
Simply amazing to be honest.

Charlie - did I hear correctly the sad news that your older Empire collection you once owned became available because of the passing of the owner?
I feel a bit scared asking this as I certainly don’t mean to offend anyone.

Added a pretty amazing large 4 1/4" stag sheepsfoot jack this week. Sold by J M Schmid & Son Providence, RI, J M Schmid was a retailer with a long history, 1871 to1964. They did not make their knives but had them made for them, German, English and US companies, most likely this knife was made by Ulster or Utica, both companies used stag in the early 1900's.
This knife covers a lot of the patterns I collect, early stag, sheepsfoot jacks, jumbo jacks.

Man that stag... The stag you see on some of these old knives is just like a completely different being than what you see produced on most stuff today.

There used to be an old Puma resource for old German Puma's anybody know a reliable one 20 years later?? Can't seem to find an up to date resource.

Brings back memories, Cal!!
Wonderful, Charlie! Look what Tony Bose did with the pattern for CASE. They called it an Arkansas Hunter.
He liked the pattern, and I sent one to Tony before he designed that one for Case!!ArkansasGroup1.jpg
Here is a grouping; from left, an Empire Stainless version with a scaler, A Shapleigh with jigged bone, A prototype from Tony when he designed the model for Case, an American fromm a company formed of disgruntled ex-Empire-employees, an ebony Empire!!

I acquired a Valley Forge knife a few years back in a trade. I haven't seen one just like it, except for a two-blader made by Boker, and I've always wondered if it was always a single blade or had a blade deleted. So when I saw this VF on the bay, I couldn't help bidding on it, if only for educational purposes. The blades are half gone, but the half that's still there are solid - no wobble. I sharpened it up and it'll make for a classy box cutter.

They both have the same slightly off center shield. 😁

Ha Ha!! I like those square bolsters; they look like precursers to Washington Bolsters!!
Neat knives!!
I have bought many "imperfect" knives for educational purposes!! Most I have given away for parts!!
Thanks! I figured it could be useful for parts, though it's in better shape than I expected.
They do look kinda like Washington bolsters to me. :)👍
