"Old Knives"

I was working at an auto body shop outside Chicago today and noticed an old knife on a shelf in the office. Not on display. Just on some stacks of paper and other dusty items.

I asked if I could check it out and take some photos.

I didn’t have a lot of time so an old Oldsmobile Cutlass under a cheap car cover had to act as the background. I apologize for the rushed photos.

The owner is from Bulgaria and not a knife guy at all. He was shocked that it’s probably over 100 years old (quick Google search). Maybe closer to 130.

I gave him some tips on oiling it and cleaning some of the scaly bits.

I was able to clean just enough of the tang stamp with a gray scotch pad to make out the stamp.

Czechoslovakia became a country on Oct 28 1918. So based on that tang stamp I would say it was made sometime after that date.

O.B.

Thank you. I didn’t go that route.

I searched for Marshall Field & Co but Todd Begg’s ‘Field Marshall’ knife polluted the search.

I found info MF&Co knives dating back to the earlier 1800’s. I had the maker/seller in mind as opposed to where it came from geographically/historically. Lesson learned 👍.

I think this knife was made by Mikov, commissioned by the Marshall field trading company from Chicago. I have seen similar knives in Mikov catalogs from the 1920s and 30s. I have also seen Marshall field knives and cutlery made in Solingen, Germany.

For as big a company as Russell was they are a hard knife to find in decent condition, barlows are fairly common but jacks and other patterns are uncommon. Picked up a 3 3/8" 2 blade bony jack, straight line tang stamps which are hard to find on a jack. All steel construction, still tight and snappy. I like Russells a lot, my Dads family were all from the Greenfield Mass area.

Looks like a GEC 86

A junior Cattle knife, made under the Syracuse Knife Co banner, by Camillus!! All blades stamped, with just a bit of age patina, it is such a nice knife, it deserved to have its crappy, old synthetic handles replaced with something better!! Appears unused, from near WWI!!!Syracuse Jr Cattle 1.jpgSyracuse Jr Cattle 2.jpgSyracuse Jr Cattle 3.jpg
The knife is 3 5/16" long, and still has nice walk and talk!!

My grandson's other Grandpa, (RIP in 2017), was a master horticulturist from Edinburgh!!
Gordon never got to see his grandsons!! (also mine)!!
When he passed, my daughter-in-law thought I should take care of his toolkit, which consisted of this set of Tina knives-of-the-trade!! Preserved for his (our) grandsons should they take an interest!!Gordons knives 1.jpgGordons knives 2.jpgGordons knives 3.jpg
Ah, Gordon, we hardly knew ye!! ☹️
