"Old Knives"

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas (in here)...Thanks for all the great images!!!

We were both writing at the same time, Robin. Didn't mean to skip by your interesting quill knife. I remember it well from Mick's thread. The knife is an interesting and rare beauty!

Hi Charlie, I love this thread, i've looked at it over and over and really wanted to contribute to it. It's a real privilege and treat to see collections like yours, Charlie Noyes, Mick Wellingtons and all the others who contribute. Thanks and

Best regards

Robin

Strawberry Fields that are a knife Elysian Fields:thumbup:

Another staggering gallery of images from the CN Trove.

PipeMan; I remember that little quill knife from the Old Sheffield thread. It is a
very interesting knife. Like a cigar cutter, only a more sophisticated purpose.

Thanks again guys.

Charlie, Yes, there are more.

Here's one I think waynorth will like -- The Empire Electrician's Knife (it says so right on the blade). A straight lockback with only the WWI Signal Corps style screwdriver blade, 3 5/8" long closed with a 2 3/8" blade, cocobolo scales. Although from the side it has only a small taper, it actually has a remarkable rounded and tapered hafting - an amazing feeling knife in the hand. Very little wear or use. Great snap and lockup -- most modern lockbacks wish they had an action half as nice as this. They even brought the lockback spring around as an extended spring to close the end neatly.

A totally spiffy Schrade Cut Co Signal Corps knife -- as far as I can tell, this is about as close to how it came out of the factory as you're likely to find. It's 3 5/8" long closed with a 2 5/8" blade and a 2 1/2" screwdriver blade -- blade has a crocus polish on the mark side and a very fine glaze finish on the pile side; screwdriver blade looks to have a very fine glaze finish both sides - clearly etched "TO RELEASE PUSH CENTER LOCK TO LEFT" -- brass center liner lock locks perfectly - absolutely no slack. Cocobolo scales.

ZeroGee, those are two very nice knives.
You just gotta love that Empire! And, beautiful wood and shield on the Schrade Cut.
Really nice.

Robeson produced some TL-29's during WWII. I've seen them with and without a bail.

I don't think I've ever seen one with a shield.

Here's my representative example:

Nice Electrician's knives, Dwight, and Charlie!
Wonderful condition - all three!!
Dwight, you are right - I am Zapped!!!:D

Here are a few Robeson Premium Stock knives.
A couple of these had been cleaned when I bought them.

This stockman has interesting bone handles. This is the only
knife I have with this handle material.
It is a PocketEze knife, so it has sunken joints.
Master clip, spey and punch blade.
4" long.
Pattern number 633596.
Very good condition.

633596B-1.jpg

This knife has green/brown jigged bone handles.
Master clip, sheetfoot and long spey blade.
Clip blade etched, "Premium Stock".
It has sunken joints, but no shield.
4" long.
Pattern number 633594.
Excellent condition.

633594-2B-1.jpg

Same pattern knife. Same type handles.
Master clip, sheepfoot and shorter spey blade.
Clip blade etched, "Premium Stock"
Brown jigged bone handles and PocketEze shield.
Sunken joints.
4" long.

Excellent condition.

633594-1B-1.jpg

Brown jigged bone handles and PocketEze shield.
Master spear, spey and an unusual punch blade.

633419B-1.jpg

This impressive knife has a sabre-cut clip master blade, sheepfoot and spey.
Jigged brown bone handles.

632750B-1.jpg

Another 596 pattern.
This one has a Turkish clip master blade, a spey and a pen.
Brown jigged bone handles.
4" long.
Pattern number 632596.
Excellent condition.

632596B-1.jpg

This 1950's stockman has white composition handles. This is a very seldom
seen handle material.
Oval Robeson shield.
Sunk joints.
Master clip, sheepfoot and spey. Master etched, "Premium Stock".
4" long.
Pattern number 432594.
Excellent unsharpened condition.

432594B-1.jpg

These next few knives are smaller.

This unusual knife has black composition handles and an oval shield.
The joints are sunk.
Master spear, sheepfoot and spey.
3 1/4" long.
Pattern number 632111.
Excellent unsharpened condition.

632111B-1.jpg

This serpentine stockman has nice brown jigged bone handles and
a PocketEze shield.
Master clip, pen and spey.
3 3/8" long.
Pattern number 633830.
Excellent unsharpened condition.

633830B-1.jpg

This is a similar knife. I think it's a bit older.

Master clip, spey and punch.
Sunk joints.
3 5/8" long.
Pattern number 833881.
Excellent unsharpened condition.

833881B.jpg

This knife has black composition handles, but the pattern number calls for
genuine bone.
This inconsistancy is found on knives made during or shortly after WWII.
Master Turkish clip, long spey and pen.
3 5/8" long.
Pattern number 633884.
Excellent unsharpened condition.

633884-RBB.jpg

Sunk joints.
3 5/8" long.
Excellent condition.

That's my stock of stock knives. I posted some others with the strawberry
bone knives earlier.
For some reason, full size premium stockmen in strawberry bone are hard to find. I think, maybe, the stock knife collectors have most of them.

Hope you enjoyed that.

Miller Bros half congress in french ivory - 3 5/16" closed, iron bolsters, brass liners. I carry this one occasionally. Wonderful swedging and sweet snappy action.

Case XX 62052 redbone half congress -- this one has been in grave danger of being carried for a while - it's just too sweet. Nickel silver bolsters and liners.

Edit to add: this is the real deal - never messed with, never used or sharpened. Of interest is that the main blade actually has less swedging than a couple of Case XX USA (no dots) that I have. They took care of business by some subtle and complex crinking and a touch of a distal taper on the main blade.

ZeroGee; Those are two very nice knives.

It always amazes me to see the quality of the "Give-Aways" from companies back before WWII. It seems like it must have been part of the U.S. program for the restoration of Japan after WWII to push inferior advertising items onto corporate America.

That 052 is almost unbelievable. That's some of the nicest bone I've seen. And, it's on a super set of blades, too.
Can it really get any better than that?
