this is a folding lock blade that predates WW1 , it likely seen service in both great wars , infamous German Tiger Knife , since it was produced prior to WW1 stainless steel was still available for such items , its dated by the tiger mark only used between 1904 and 1931

Italian Black Shirt Dagger , the Black Shirts were a Para Military organization during WW2 much akin to the Nazi party of Germany , unlike the Nazis the Black Shirts were eventually absorbed into the regular Military of Italy , im going off my old memory because i did not include info in the folder i have the pics in , i believe this is the second variation , 2 rivet , i think the first had 3 rivets , pretty scarce piece

In Ritchie's book on Cattaraugus knives, it says gunstocks were patterns #42 and #73. Both were 3 5/8 inch long, but the 42 has a bolster/blade configuration closer to your knife. Here is a photo of page 95 of that book, showing model # 22426, which is the closest gunstock I found to match yours. The shield is different, the nail pulls are different, and the bolster is different. But it still is very close. Those artistic renderings of knives for the company catalogs were not always 100% accurate to what the factory put out the door.

Thanks so much. That matches what I have found as well.

Empire and Wolstenholm had a fierce competition around the turn of the last century, over the quality of their steel!! As told to me by a descendant of an Empire cutler, Wolstenholm released some poorly made knives stamped Empire into the market, with "soft" steel!!!
Empire tried to steal I*XL's thunder by releasing Empire knives marked "WE*XL"!!!! An incomplete story, but here's some evidence!!!
Only one I have ever seen!!!!

I wish I knew all the details!!! 😲

A real interesting collection of knives, I have a couple of German Knives that have similarities.

The Thompson Guide Knife seems to be the exact frame as the Tiger but with the normal lock-back release on the rear of the spring.

The Etch A.F & Co. is for Abercrombie & Fitch,

M migmaq interesting collection you got there! May I ask what's the story behind the German Tiger knife? Why is it infamous?

And just out of curiosity, what's the reason to paint the numbers on that one?

serial number , the world is full of weirdos that will try and claim something as theirs , it was purchased from a reputable dealer so i have provenance of how/where i acquired it , but if someone has the number that gives them something to base their treachery on , but if they only get one guess to get the last 2 digits it discourages , i do the same with my firearms

the tiger knives are just really well made and sought after , as far as value the gravity knife is more valuable than the tiger , that particular Tiger knife i scoured the internet looking for the same model and i couldnt find anything close

pair of WW2 USM3 fighting knives ,

1st one is a 2nd variation type by IMPERIAL , 1st variation had the date , they dropped the date on the 2nd

2nd one is the least common of all 5 variations , it has no markings , if i am remembering correctly it is documented that due to the shortage of fighting knives for troops some were released without receiving their markings , not certain where in the other 4 variations this occurred

1) ,,, WW2 USN Mk1 PAL RH-35 , when the US entered WW2 there was a shortage of knives , Remington sold their cutlery division to concentrate o their efforts on arms and munitions production , purchased by PAL and in order to start production right away utilized Remington's hunting knife patterns and marked their blades RH and then the model designation , RH stands for Remington Hunting , PAL stopped providing knives for the military at the conclusion of WW2 , and since they started at the beginning of the war all of their RH knives are WW2 military , the Pal RH-35 , RH-36 and RH-37 both versions , Pal RH 37 marked USMC and USN , the PAL 37the more scarce and has eluded me so far , but i have the RCC USN Mk2

2),,,at the end of the War the PAL RH35 ceased production so they needed a replacement , this is the transitional knife that bridged between the RH35 and the pilot "Bolt Knives" , pretty uncommon since their production was limited , only Camillus produced the few before the more modern Bolt style was adopted

3),,,Bolt style Pilot knives

4),,,WW2 Pal RH36

5,,,WW2 PAL RH37 USN Mk2 , both the USN Mk1 and USN Mk 2 had blue scabbards
