"Old Knives"

Thanks Charlie, that is an interesting thought. It's a shame they didn't notice how beautiful the jigging looked. Thanks very much for your input.

Best regards

Robin

With bone that good looking and the fact in its current state it probably isnt worth much as a collector piece, I'd send it out to one of the accomplished makers on here and have it rebladed. If they copied the tang on each piece precisely they would only need to press out the current pin.

I love unique jigging, and that is one nicely aged piece of bone.

From my buddy,
"Kelly - How - Thompson , 1896 - 1947, Duluth Minnesota hardware retailer, many of whose earlier knives were built by Napanoch.
This example exhibits the heavily undercut tangs and aggressive blade action of a Napanoch, like the one pictured here that you have seen previously. They also used a Hickory trademark. 3 1/2" closed, heavily carried, well worn, extensively sharpened down blades, nice, black ebony scales with a chocolate streak on the reverse scale. Nickel silver pins, bolsters, and arrowhead shield. Brass liners, NO center liner
( earlier knife ). Hard snaps with very crisp half stops on secondary blades, main has round tang. Well used but decent example of a nice older pattern and a somewhat scarce tang stamp"

For extensively sharpened it looks to be in great condition, the top shot of the blades alignment in the frame is amazing with the deep swedges on the main blade.

Thanks for sharing.

Killer sleeveboard with the nail nick in that big ol swedge.

This harness jack is stamped Eagle but was made by New York Knife Company. It looks like Eagle ground off the NYK Co. stamp. Eagle was a wholeseller and this knife might have been a NYK Co. second.

Eagle did buy NYK seconds. The Eagle stamp is often crude and mis-struck - That's a great example, Mike!!

Thanks guys.

I'd love to find a knife like the sleeveboard that Vince posted for his friend. A list of who made contract knives for which hardware stores, etc. would be pretty cool.

Here is an Axel Nilsson sleeveboard. These were sold by J.M. Thompson Hardware based in Minneapolis. Since the above knife was also from a Minnesota-based hardware firm, I wonder if sleeveboards were popular in the upper midwest.

Vince's post with the jumbo whittler above prompted me to post these. As he said, Hickory was also a brand used by Kelly - How - Thompson of Duluth, Mn. I purchased these from a man from Duluth. This one's not as nice as the one he posted but I thought it's interesting because of the two-groove punch blade and the catch-bit beside the master blade to give the punch blade more room. The other one is a well used "OVB" by Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co.
