"Old Knives"

Thanks so much ADEE, it's my pleasure! What do you reckon the stamp on the master blade may signify?

Nice pickup Jack,I like to find the mirror finish among the rust and patina. It authenticates the original beauty that's lost with age.Wish I had some mirror finish....

Nick I love that big whittler,I have a Rawson jack that is a favorite of mine.

Gev - thats a neat looking knife mate, Can I see more of that beauty please? Quick Question -I love Stag - love it to bits, this is a beautiful looking knife - the Bone-is this Pressed do you think? it can be hard to tell at times, and the Vintage Solingen pressed bone was extremely well done!
Great knife - this is one of the great threads!!

Thanks, my friend!! It was getting dark and the picture is not great but it will have to do for now.

Duncan
I wondered myself at first but upon closer inspection, I am willing to bet its real. I will take some pictures tomorrow, time allowing, of the grain on the edges.

Thank you, my friend!

Duncan, you can see the grain on the margins of the bone in this picture. Zoom in on it. If you need more pics ....just ask.

Here's nice old Rawson Brothers whittler from the golden age of Sheffield. This one measures 3 7/8' closed, with brass liners, and very nice buttery colored covers made of ivory or bone (previous owner wasn't sure). Interesting stamp on the master blade too, reads "Cock Knife," with a rooster and the letter S underneath.

Hey Nick - that is a super knife - great find. Is the rooster crowing for the farmer??? ;):D:D:D

Never mind about the rooster thing, I guess I just have roosters and farmers on my mind.

Sorry Gevo - Google says nope, zilch, nutin, huh - what did ya say?? :D:D

Maybe you can assign some research to Humppa, since he probably has some spare time on his hands and lives in the birth land. :o:D

I can tell you a few things - it is a really beautiful old knife with fantastic bolsters, fantastic shield, and wonderful covers!!! The long pull - on both blades - are sweet too!!;):D

Thanks my friend. I checked Blades Guide as well. Nothing. I don't think Andy has any reference books? But maybe he knows something, good idea.

Kinda hard to tell,as Duncan said, without the knife in hand.It seems yours is just stag ,if I were asked though ,Steve.

Thanks, Lyle!! That Henckels could sure fool ya. It even looks like it has some grain:eek: Thanks for your opinion on mine!! If you find anything in your library let me know:D

Cool - thank you Lyle, Absolutely lovely knives there Sir, I still dont know - and as you know my knowledge is down there a bit :thumbdn: :thumbdn: there is a LOT of resemblance to Gevs knife and the Henckels scales!

I only bring that up because the knife is so nice, the fact whether the scales are Pressed or natural doesnt make the smallest of differences to me on how I like that knife! Its just Great!

Gev, I wasnt to sure whether the grain came into the fact it was there or not if pressed? I really dont know my friend, I just know you got some beautiful knives!

Thanks you very much, Duncan!! I just put the knife under a dissecting microscope and the porosity in quite distinct.

I really would like to have a pressed one in hand for comparison but I just don't see how they can reproduce the microscopic pores

As I understand, but I'm an authority by no means,it is actual stag,so it would have the same structure as other stag, only an aesthetically enhanced surface.

Here are some pressed stag

Lyle - when you or someone else says Pressed Stag - is that pressed bone made to look like gnarly stag or is it smooth stag pressed or is it some other material made to look like gnarly stag?

I think that IXL Whittler that I gave to Stephen is very similar to these covers.

If it is actually real smooth stag or bone before pressing, wouldn't it also have pores?:confused:

I feel dumb tonight - help me to understand the meaning of pressed stag. :o:confused::confused::)

I see your post above mine now and I might have been thinking right.

Maybe the Sheffield cutlers got so good at it that they can fool many of us today into thinking gnarly stag???:confused::)
