"Old Knives"

Beautiful knives and interesting info, Jolipapa. Are those round things above the knife a string of awards?

No simple discs for decoration purpose.
It was quite common on certain ancient knives, the most known being the Rouennais (from Normandy) and St Martin

I may help to clarify if you need.

@Jack : I asked about the multi-purpose, but it seems it was not made in Thiers, so until now, no answer...

Already posted in the Sunday thread, but her place is here :

Aurillac plat , the original version. Created by Vigier, cutler in Aurillac (the coldest town in France!) still existing un der the name of Destannes in the same place.

It reads Vigier Ainé / A Aurillac

The Coutellerie Destannes, 7 rue des frères, Aurillac, in 1908
The man with the béret is Jean Destannes, Madame Vigier (the former owner) is at the right, in the arms the Destannes twins, Georges and René. The little girl with the flag is Simonne Destannes.

The Aurillac is still produced, but with the years his belly has rounded (reminds me someone...)

Thank you for the nice offer. If a question comes up, I may take you up on the offer.

I thoroughly enjoyed the photos and historical information in your post!

This is somewhat off topic, but I had a fun experience ordering knives from a tobacco shop in France a few years ago. I telephoned them (that was the only contact) and unfortunately my few classes in school (a long long time ago) did not prepare me very well.... "Bonjour... Parlez vous en anglais?" :D "Je suis american." :D The sales person tried speaking English and I tried speaking French. She showed great patience but we just couldn't understand each other. So she gave me her email address and we both used Google translate. It was a success and a fun experience. :)

Inherited a sack full of knives from my dad, many he inherited from his dad or uncles. Here's one I can't quite make out. It says Made in NY, and above that: NA????CH KNIFE CO.

What Gev said! Great knife - can you show us more please - try to get close-ups of the stamping, and in general take a few shots of this knife , for instance the back Springs etc

Thank you the same applies for you and many others here. I learn a lot in this forum and appreciate the atmosphere. I just try to give back what I receive.

You've been a great addition to The Porch in my opinion

Wow!

I don't think the Napanoch ever had a bail. The knife was the handle part of the kits they made where you could add a blade to the other end. The kits included different blades like a saw, chisel, hammer etc.

Just added this Wade&Butcher pruner, not marked England, appears to have XCO stamped on blade, not sure what that stands for.

Thanks Jack and SK. SK, thanks for the clearing up the mark, makes sense.

My bad on the bail call, on the Napanoch. Good work Galvanic and Jake:thumbup::thumbup:

Great Wade & Butcher, Augie!! Your on a good roll!!:thumbup::D

Thanks for the ID on the Napanoch, it's one of my favorites. I actually carried it for a few months, takes a razor keen edge. I'm having trouble getting good pics, here are a few, I'll try for better later.

Wormil Sir
Its great you are using that knife- but please take my advice, use it gently, dont sharpen it too much as you have a Napanoch that has a relatively full blade - leave it that way, and THANK YOU so much for the extra photo's. I HAVE ENJOYED THE VIEWING IMMENSELY..

Jeff, thats a really cool Pearl Robeson, very very nice to see - thats a cool knife my friend!

I picked up this locally - which is a wee bit of a coup because you dont see too many older Case Fixed blades around here.
Pretty good nick I guess, its between 1945 and 1965 so its as Old as I am - for that I feel sorry for it, a nice honest knife - the tip ( as per usual ) is rounded, heres a question for you folk.

1, Would you re-tip it to a nice point, I am not going to use the knife ( that I know of, I just bought it for keepsies ) - I can re-tip the knife very well if I had to without having to polish the blade or anything like that at all, and I find when you do this the knife with a nice crisp point to the Clip always looks the better knife - love to hear your opinions as I do value them.
The original Sheath is inside the reinforced outer.
Duncan.
