"Old Knives"

You guys are certainly showing some great knives these days. Here is one of my favorites, just because it is a little different in pairing the pearl with a punch

Yowzer Jamie, if that beauty ever needs a new home you know who to PM!!! Beautiful whittler my friend!

If only there could be a Wolf Whistle icon Jake. Im loving that Challenge- and that Valley forge is something different - can you tell us more please Sir?

Thank you for the comments on the knife. Both knives are presently in the careful hands of the US postal service. I posted the sellers' photos like we often do in the "Whatcha got on order?" thread. I don't think either knife has been messed with aside from normal usage but I'll know for sure once I get a better look at them.

I haven't done much research on the knives. I found some close examples in catalogs but I'll need to do some digging to find an exact match.

The full figured Valley Forge knife is a "Wharncliffe jack" pattern though it does not have a Wharncliffe blade. I'll need to look it up to make sure....brb...yes, according to Levine's Guide (p186) the name is used to describe all jacks with this handle. The handle is somewhat similar to the handle on the Schrade 804 that a nice fellow in NZ gave to me.

The fancy bolster on the Challenge jack reminds me a bit of Schrade's "Washington Bolster" which Charlie used on his "Washington Jacks". I think "Washington" was just used by Schrade. Anyone know the general name for this type of fancy bolster?

Thank you, Mike.

...btw...I haven't seen photos of the VF with blades closed but I suspect the joint may be sunk. That may be one of the reasons for this design. I'm looking forward to getting a closer look at the knife.

Sweet pair of knives Jake. I like the clean, angular lines of the Challenge--everything is linear, even the rat-tail bolster, but the shield adds a nice curvy contrast to all those straight lines.

The Valley Forge is interesting. I haven't seen that handle and blade combination before. The curves seem like they will nest together nicely when the blade is closed. Can't wait for pics when it's in hand!

I would be looking forward to that as well Jake - great to have the Catalog too! - cant wait to see more!

Nice knives. The Challenge is a beauty! The VF is quite different and I can't wait to see a picture of it closed.

I have a Wostenholm bowie knife I'm trying to get more information on. Markings: G. Wostenholm & son Washington Works Sheffield. I*XL I have pictures but I'm unable to upload them.

Texas if you send them to me I will post them for you. If you go into my profile you should find my email.
We will need photos.

Is a gunstock whittler like that Robeson actually an "Orange Blossom" if it wasn't made by New York Knife?

I've always wondered.

Thank you, guys.

Charles (chuko), I'll be happy to add the photos to the other thread.

Good question, Charlie (CNoyes). I looked in Levine's Guide.... In the appendix, "orange blossom" is defined as "a four-blade gunstock lobster pen knife" and brand is not specified. The history is described in the main text. Common usage sometimes changes things... like calling tissue "Kleenex" regardless of brand. I don't know if that is the case here. I'll be interested in hearing Charles' opinion.

Very much appreciated for the history on the knives. Looks like it was someone's daily knife many years back based on the age. I may use it as an everyday knife, bushcrafting, etc. Very much appreciated! I posted in the Axe Info thread as well, if you have any info there, that'd be superb!

Sidenote, I have an old pocket knife with Solingen written on the handle, I am guessing this may be a Taiwanese copy though. Still looks good though.

I have some whittler sleeveboard style lobsters, various makers. I also have a number of gunstock whittler lobsters all essentially the same size and pattern that I have understood to be Orange Blossom patterns. Many of them displayed in this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/916443-Any-Love-for-Orange-Blossom-lobsters

I understand the reference to NYK and add this knife to the discussion/confusion.
