"Old Knives"

Wester is a quality name in pocket knives Kevin. Did you ever trap muskrats? Grin'n
Hopefully not the same level of spring as those nasty ol' 330's:eek:

I figured there must be a trapper or two out there that would catch that "conibear" reference ;) I used to trap muskrat, beaver and otter with my Dad when I was much younger but after awhile it just got to the point where we were spending more money than we were getting out of it. I was never allowed to touch the conibear traps until I was 16 because apparently before that I was "accident prone" LoL. :D

I decided to take my knives out of boxes and take pictures of them on the floor... Most of these are worn and I guess oldness is debatable. (If you know production dates let me know) Most of these will be restored and hopefully sold at some point in my life. If you guys see any that you think should be left alone please let me know!

CW Dahlgren Sweden - I saw one sell on Ebay with the original metal sheath... doubt I'll ever find one. Love the thickness of this knife. The handle is cockeyed but there is no play at all. Not sure if I'm going to remove it.

Opinel pile imported from France - some pretty old and some pretty new. Anyone know of a guide to date these:

Apart from finding a respectful way to re-handle the Western (West-Cut), I would do absolutely nothing to any of the other knives you shared above. The West-Cut was an affordable Western States Cutlery knife that likely had a plastic handle of some sort; it's probably from the 50's based on what I have read. The Scandinavian knives you have are really cool, especially the Mora's but I have no idea of dates on those. The Finnish knife is a Iisakki Jarvenpaa scout knife made in Kauhava, Finland; the date is hard to guess but I do know they started production on this knife in 1929. I'm doing some research on that Solingen knife with the "fistful of spears" logo and will let you know if I find anything. Other than that, thanks for sharing with us :)

Back to Maher & Grosh, here's a pretty nice Heavy Jack, with the now infamous shield, followed by a probable Schrade or Ulster production M&G Cattle knife.

Roger C. collects M&G knives and contracts GEC to do his high-quality reproductions.
He said:
"Charlie,I have no documentation as to makers, only observations. New York Knife made some of the very early knives. Miller Brothers were a major supplier for many years and Ulster also.I haven't seen any obvious Empire made knives, but I am not that well versed on Empires. I would not be surprised if Camillus made some also. Many Camillus knives don't stand out much to me from some others.
Also later Schrade Walden-made bone knives stamped M&G and Schrade, and later Queen(both bone and delrin), Robeson(delrin) and Schrade (delrin).
In several older catalogs they had a what they called a "Forest service" knife that appears to be a Cattaraugus Junior Scout. The illustration doesn't show a tang stamp, so it may have a Catt stamp. They did the same thing with switchblades; many had the makers stamp, but I have seen M&G stamped ones.
As you know Empire and Miller Brothers quit making knives close to the same time.I don't know if I have cleared the waters or not. Roger"

Thanks Roger!!!

Eisman- what a fine HSB! A great Knife in great condition.

Man.... Blademan my friend- we never get sick of looking at a Robeson Pocketeze!!!
Gorgeous Knife. Well done matey.

Empire Knife Co. made so many knives for other brands because they made great knives!!
I'm stripping out two display cases to take to Oregon, for Knowtracks' Boys' knives display, and in one case were knives I call "relics". Lots of them are good, usable knives and some are downright beauties!! This Empire Jack is worn down, but still crisp and snappy, and has what (I have been told) their famous Black Stag handles. Oxidized black with Potassium Permanganate apparently, they are wonderfully fitted, they are a joy to behold. Both tangs have the old EMPIRE (over) WINSTED (over) CT. stamping, with "603" on the back of the main. Under a glass, the "period" after CT. is square, helping to verify the stamp! Note the filled pen blade space - nice "Sheffield" touch!!

How can we disagree with you Charlie on all aspects of that Knife.

The “ period” is this the Full Stop you are describing? If so what was the cut off era for using a Square full stop?

I used to own quite a few Sheffield Black Stag Knives and - as we do - look back and shake our heads of the knives that we let slip through our fingers.

( Still love that wee Skull Rock)

Herder- that is such a great Knife!!!!
Do you think that ST on the Badge is a personal Monogram- or Factory? It looks Stamped not engraved from what I can see on my phone?
Either way it adds to the Knife in a good way imo.

Thanks Campbellclanman and I'm not certain, but I believe the "ST" was a logo of some sort for a company who contracted out to Utica for that knife.
I'd love to hear if anyone else knows what it stands for.

Quality knife Jamie.
Eisman, that looks Camillus or Utica,I don't know who numbered tangs as such?
Beauty Kevin.
Herder ,those handles on that lovely knife are so reminiscence or Schrade peach seed.
Aristocratic boys knife Charlie.

Been working on this one for a while but finally finished my first display collection :) I couldn't do things the easy way of course because I set my mind to fill this up with only Schrade-Walden's . I did, except for the 77OT and 194OT, both of which went into production in 1976 so Schrade-Walden's were never made in those models. With that said, I present my Schrade-Walden Old Timer & Uncle Henry collection for your viewing :D

I also found it's not easy to get good pictures with a display case .
