Old or new???

If you do go contemporary, the Spyderco Kopa would be excellent and still has a more traditional feel to it with bolsters and handle materials. I think ebay or somewhere had the squash bone handles for $69.99. It's a great knife that could be carried with or without the pocket clip.

That is a fantastic idea! Ill see if i can find one, that would be perfect:thumbup::D:D

+1 on the Spyderco Kopa. I picked up one of the squash bone Kopa's a couple of months ago and it is an beautiful little knife. Fit and finish is awesome, and the flat ground VG-10 blade slices like a razor.

I would get him something of a mix of old and new. Check out this new Boker got the old time studless design and overall shape, but with g10 and Ti lock and clip.
the large goes for around $50 and the small around $35 or so.

That Böker crossed my mind as well.
Going to buy one myself with my new paycheck.

It's called the Böker Exskelibur or Exskelimoor available in two sizes and with wood or G10.

Grandfather= traditional slipjoint in carbon steel. If what he carried was an Old timer slipjoint, then he will probably be more comfortable with another slippie. Case makes several in the CV steel, which you have already mentioned. A medium stockman might be the ticket for him. I found out, after 3 or 4 modern knives, that my father said "nice" but they went into his drawer. After that I begin to seek out medium sized carbon steel Case knives, as Case is what he had always carried, and came up with several over the years that he gladly used.:)

Try a Kiwi in carbon fiber. They are on special at the Spyerco website. The steel is VG10-good stuff.

many great suggestions guys!

Im really liking the boker exskeliber, kopa, and some of the case CV blades...im also thinking the CF kiwi...hmmm still cant decide...and i dont want to ask him and ruin the surprise..

I'd second the Kopa idea, and pick one up fast. there are Squash bones on eBay for good prices right now.

It'd be very interesting to see how your grandpa reacts to a traditional-styled contemporary knife such as the Kopa, with one-handed opening and premium SS blade.

Or if you could find out which Old Timer he had, you can find the original, made in USA models on the bay and get him a replacement.

Man those look great! Im really liking that case med stockman, i love that patina:thumbup:

Well, Queen makes a nice knife, but the D2 is a challenge to sharpen with traditional stones. I'd probably go with one of the Case knives in CV. Extremly easy stuff to sharpen.

Do not buy him anything that you may think he likes. He's an old man, and old men don't like big changes. See if you can find out what model Old Timer he had, and then try to find the closest model to it in a Case CV. A traditional carbon steel model in a very modest size will be what he really appreciates.

I know, because I'm an old grandfather too. I'd hate it if my grandson gave me one of those new knives that look...well, like something I wouldn't want.

Carbon steel and jigged bone. He'll like that!

I say get him something he is familiar with and you know he will like. Most old timers don't like to change what works for the sake of variety.
That Case sodbuster or a Case pen knife would be something I reccomend. Case is very hard to beat out of the box, Queen means you are going to spend some quality time with a stone to get an edge on it. Case come with nice grinds and are always sharp out of the box, plus they are classics your grandfather is sure to recognise with quality.
A Victorinox Swiss Army Knife is always a good call as well.

I'm inclined to agree with this suggestion. If he was fond of the Old Timer slipjoint, I'm guessing it was rather painful for him to lose it. I would think it'd be thoughtful to get him something that pays homage to the qualities he liked in his old knife. The Case idea is almost bulletproof, IMO. Queens are also nice, but if he has to spend much time resharpening it initially (Queens are known to come with rather obtuse edge grinds on their very tough D2 blades, making resharpening a challenge for someone who may not be comfortable doing that). Also, a slipjoint may be more comfortable for him if his hands are getting a bit tired or arthritic. Some locking knives might be uncomfortable or awkward for him to unlock, if his hands are hurting a lot of the time.

Good luck to you in your search. Your grandfather is a fortunate man to have someone like you looking out for him this way.

How about a Case Texas Jack.....in CV of course.....

Just about the perfect size for pocket carry.

I bet this is the Old Timer he had...I think all of us did at one point...

Rarely can I not find a 34ot on the bay.

hmm its looking like a good slipjoint is the best option...im thinking a case medium stockman with the amber jigged bone would do the trick...
