Old school

Hi all,

Chris seeing your knife in the same pic with your hawk. Sure brings back some memories. I had and used a knife like that shape for many a years,
but mine was a sharade and it was not exacly like yours, but pretty close.
I lived in a rual area on a farm and used that knife for every thing. from cleaning birds to beef and a bunch of animals that I trapped. Late 70s and early 80s when the trapping was really paying. My axe was a blue handled estwing and my knife was the sharade. I used them both for all my hiking and camping that I did. I had such fun, But, there is always but LOL
I would not trade my current set up to back and use that old sharade for nothing. Here is my current set up.

I carry these 2 knives and the hatchet every day here on the farm. I made both knives and the hatchet and the sheath that holds both knives. The reason I would not go back to the old is that these knives fit me. I shaped the handles. That old knife that I had did not fit very good in my hand like these knives do. I did not know any better back then LOL but since I have been making knives and hatchets I can fit them to me just right and they are so comfy. The handles being in orange are great to I love being able to set my knife down after using it and seeing it right away. I would set that old knife down and go to grab it and now where did I put that thing. It was just right here. LOL
Grampa this is him on his atv and me standing next to him last summer when Kathy and I went for a walk. Kathy took the pic.

A couple of weeks back Grampa gave me his pocket knife to sharpen it up. It wa his dads knife I am going to be 40 this year and that knife is twice my age:eek:
It was a 3 bladed knife now it is 2 well really one blade is still a cutting blade the other one was ground into a flat tip screw driver. the other blade was broken off years ago. I held that knife in my hand and thought YUCK LOL It did not fit my hand at all. Would it work for cutting yes. I am not a big fan of pocket knives anyways. I like fixed blades so much better.
Any ways I liked to see the older knives that you and others have posted but when you said you look at the new knives and then put them in the drawer and go for the older stuff I thought Man your crazy :D I do not mean to say that in a bad way to each his own and all that. But I will still take my newer comfy orange colored handled knives, than that old flat backed,
handled knife with the scales that were to thin and just a little rounded on the edges. Yes I had fun and it did all the cutting chores I needed a knife to do, But now that I have been exsposed to what I make now there is no comparison.

I respect your thoughts and think you are a down to earth kind of guy. I really like the pics you post of of your outdoors adventures. The fishing one are awesome. It was neat to see all the older knives and the hatchet.

11X11 Thank for posting that hatchet /knife with the sheath. I have been trying to remember what that sheath looked like. My cousin had one and when he came to our farm for summer visits he would bring that combo and I thought it was great. We would take off into the timber and explore and roam around. It was such great fun. I have been trying to think of how that sheath looked and was going to post a thread on it this week seeing if any body had one. I have been thinking about making up a sheath like that for one of my hatchets and a knife that I drew up last night.

meedham that knife you posted with the bigger blade on a pack. One of my friends that I went camping with had one. Boy the memories LOL

Bryan, I have admired your rig many times, I think that is about as good as it gets in a very compact, packable configuration. I did not mean to insinuate that there is not anything better than my outfit, just that it is right for me. And to get a bit mushy, my father worked a lot when I was a kid and wasn't around too much, wasn't his fault, he had to make ends meet and I had clothes on my back and food on the table because of it. As a result, most of what I learned about the outdoors was straight from my grandfather, who was a true, raised in a logging camp, mountain man. The knife pictured was his, I can remember him showing me how to dress my first deer with that knife, I can close my eyes and see it in the back pocket of his overalls. When I was a kid I thought it was the absolute pinnacle of outdoors knives, kinda still do. I know there are probably better knives with better steel and more comfortable handles, but it is pretty much going to have to be something made by Obi Wan Kenobi to get that knife out of my hands. Hi all,

Chris, thanks. I like my set up and it works for me. It may not be for some but that is ok. LOL Man I know what you ment that about the there being better steels and such. I use 0-1 so it is not the super steels. LOL
Chris that is so cool that you have been able to keep that knife that was your Grandads. Like you said when you close your eyes and can see your Grand dad and how he helped in your learning of the out doors, I bet that the memories just flood your thinking. WOW cherish those memories man. I am sure you do:D.

Grampa still has some of his freinds come by ,and now every time that I see any of them with there cover alls on I will think about you and what you said about your Grand dad with his on and that knife in his back pocket LOL . There is one fellow that still comes buy to chat with grampa and he, well I do not remeber a time that I have not seen in his LOL. Boy when those to older fellas get to talking about the old days and what the 20s and 30 were like for them. It is so neat to hear what they did and how they did them. Grampa still talks about his mom going out and picking the plants like lambs quarters and wild black berries and straw berries, mulberries and dandelions, nettles, Chickory for coffee ( all I can say I will eat a worm before before I ever drink any of that stuff again YUCK LOL)
I swear grampa can take the boiling coffee right from the stove and pour it in his cup and not just sip it but take a full gulp of the hot stuff and drink it right down. I do not know how he can stand it LOL He does the same with soup. I have to blow on mine and then sip it LOL He just laughs at the rest of us Kids as he calls us, I am almost 40 . But he always says it was free ( them plants ) and we did not not have that much money back then.

The hunting and trapping that they did back then and the times that they had are so cool to listen to.
Yes we have some cool hi tec stuff these days, but in years to come when you and I and rest of the gang here on BF talk to the younger guys about what times were like years ago. They will be sayin wow you guys had it rough LOL. But we will be thinking about our Grand dads and what they said to us and how there times were.

Well again great thread and seeing thoes pics that you all shared sure does bring back memories for me.

Chris if you would not mind sharing some storeis of your Grand dad with me Please feel free to e-mail at tacklebreeden@yahoo.com I would love to hear some them expereinces that you had with him.

i love my 110 and my cv trapper from case, but i've also got an old royal navy sailors knife that was my fathers and is of great sentimental vaule, all are great for using.

on a different note, i just got a marbles knife the other day, and though it's alright it's nowhere near what i was expecting- the spacers were uneven, and the handle's too small. It's a shame because the design sits really well, i'll have to get an older version to compare
