I have an old Worker in SS that has clip screw broke off in it, and a Walker that needs a pro sharpening. Does Spyderco fix that problem? Also do they fix a tip that has some big chips out of it? Will they sharpen the serrations? These I bought new about 10-12 yrs ago. I have never dealt with Spyderco CS so the help would be appriciated. thank you

Give them a call. It doesn't sound like you have any problems they can't fix. I've seen pictures of serrated edges they have refurbished for others, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Unfortunately you are in a grey area. When you bought the knife, repairs and sharpening would have been free. You could have sent your knife in, no matter how old, and they would have fixed, sharpened, oiled and cleaned it for free.

However, Spyderco changed their warranty and no longer honor the original one. They now charge for any sharpening or repair. The only thing free is if it a definitive manufacturing defect. They do not stock parts for old or non-USA made models, but with the screw, they may still use the same size.

Best bet is to ignore brownshoe

 That is always sound advice.

If you send it in and pay for shipping, they will clean the blade up for you nicely as long as there is enough blade left to do so. The clip screws may be a problem if they no longer have them after years of the model being discontinued. Contacting them is much more helpful than posting here about it.

When he bought the knife there was no charge for sharpening. Now there is a $5 charge. They call it shipping and handliing, but the original deal was you only had to pay to ship it to them, it came back for free.

When he bought the knife there was no charge for any repair and repairs were not limited. Read the website, there is now a $20 charge and repairs are limited.

Sure don't listen to me, but that doesn't make me wrong.

No. being wrong makes you wrong. Being reflexively negative makes you wrong.

Calling Spyderco will get him the correct current procedure for what they can do for him, regardless of your ongoing and essentially meaningless rants about how the big bad world has changed over the years. Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis.

10-12 year old knives that have served their purpose over that time have gotten him his money's worth. If Spyderco can revive them, that's gravy, not your sour grapes.

Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis.

Times change we change with them.

A warranty and sharpening policy was bought with the knife. Time has passed, but the original contract with a customer should be kept. New warranty and repair policy should only apply to new knives. The old warranty bought with the knife should still be honored.

That's what I'd call a simple and honest approach to business.

But then Mr. Benjamin, you're from Jersey and may have a different perspective.

for the record spyderco's warranty service is excellent, and treated me excellently.

Grind axes much?

Oh, come on, let him embarrass himself all he wants. He just might cross the ban line if you let him. ;)

Mr. Benyamin, Sorry I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Most of my family got off the boat in NYC and many stayed in the NY-NJ area. I spent my childhood holidays in both NYC and the Jersey area and love it. I love Jersey and respect the people. I've been to the Pine Barrens, the Jersey shore, even Trenton.

It's a great part of the country, but I know my relatives from there accept things as "part of life" that people elsewhere do not put up with. Not good, not bad, just different. That's all I meant.

Again, I am sorry I hurt your feelings, I was making a statement of a difference. From your statement "I hunt in the open" one could mistakenly assume you are "hunting" me. I know that as super moderator, you have the power and can "shoot" me, thus please be assured, my comment was not meant as insult.

You didn't hurt my feelings. You violated a rule by insulting a Bladeforums member in a forum where this is not appropriate. We encourage statements of fact even when these may not be popular. But statements derogatory of a group -- people of an area -- are not fact, they are prejudicial.

Especially in an area as heavily populated as New Jersey, with so many different communities and people of such varied backgrounds, this sort of stereotyping is all the less accurate. For example, I am not from New Jersey, I only happen to live here now.

Hi M2HSSR-910SBK,

We can probably help you out. As mentioned, contacting Customer service is best.

As Mr. Brownshoe mentioned, we did change our policy some years ago. Our policy was being heavily abused by some and adjustments had to be made. (there are always those "some" that make it difficult for the rest of us). We always try our best to please our customers.

Mr. Brownshoe. I admire your intelligence and have great respect for your knowledge. I sure wish there was something I could do to appease the "fire in your belly" over some long ago incident.

BTW, My grandparents too landed in NYC (from Turkey). I too spent my early years in the New York area. I was raised in the "projects" of Brooklyn & the Bronx.

Even though I do not know Sal personally, I am pretty intimate about the way he does business through experience of mutual friends that have done business with him in producing things to go with special runs of knives. All I can say is that if every knife company had the integrity and outright kindness (even in business matters) that I know Sal practices our little world would be better than it is.

To give his detractors any major credence other than an example of not being able to please everyone all the time would be a great disservice to the philosophy in which Spyderco conducts it's business. Thankfully most of us see the +90% good that we enjoy from the people in this knife world, then there are the few that point out the bad which sticks out like a sore thumb in our world or constantly attempt to put a negative spin on much of what is a myopic view of things at best.

Spyderco has treated me excellently in terms of customer service. I have no complaints. Paying $5 for return shipping is well worth the service received. I'm pretty sure you can't ship anything UPS for $5 dollars these days so they are probably still losing money.
