OOOOOHHH! New way to get a patina!

That crossed my mind too. :D

Looking at a description of the Vinegaroon on a university's web page (Texas A&M Ag Extension), they say it's '85% concentrated acetic acid'. Sounds like it'd work, if could somehow convince the bug to spray ONLY the blade. That might be the tricky part...

David,
That's a very very cool critter, I love to handle those things, Im not too sure what it is, but whenever I go out in our native bush areas, I go off track and always find great spiders and bring them down for the kids or sue to scream at, them gently put them back, just a beautiful wee thing....fascinating. Its funny because when I do this I get only a tinge of ...hard to explain fear-probably more caution than fear..but about 80% wonder of the fantastic creature that I am so glad to be gazing at.

85% ? Yikes! Regular vinegar is only about 5%. That bug juice might do more than just patina the knife.

That's what I was thinking. My neighbor, from who's yard I 'rescued' the bug, told us that one of her dogs had attempted to eat one of these in the past, and that's what she was worried about. That just HAD to be NASTY, and more than a bit uncomfortable for the poor dog. Hate to think what getting sprayed in the eyes would feel like.

Duncan, I feel the same way. Spring & Summer are my favorite seasons here, as we start looking forward to seeing the 'critters' turn up in the yard. We see these Vinegaroons fairly regularly (I actually have a pic of another one, caught the year before, and again alongside a Case whittler for scale), and the Sagebrush lizards and Checkered Whiptail & Striped Whiptail lizards start hangin' out on the porch & patio. And then there are the Bullsnakes, Coachwhip snakes and even an occasional rattlesnake (caught & released at least one of each of these, and a Black-Tailed Rattlesnake last summer). I really do start to perk up in the Springtime... :)

Great thread. My father would be salivating over this one. Old Timers are exactly what he considers a pocket knife should be. He's went through his share of them over the years. Might need to pick him up a little OT jack or stockman for father's day, last time I was home it looked like he had about went through another.

What's the mid-sized version of the OTs that is a jack pattern? Something around 3 1/2ish"? I feel like I can't call myself a knifemaker until I know what a "real work knife" is supposed to feel like.
