CHECK OUT THE PICTURES OF USE AT THE BOTTUM!
I have been moving away from many of the designs that interested me of late...I guess that I am officially getting old. I have given in to the fact that I have to carry an axe, as I need one to live off of the land..I have admited that I like leather handles...wood handles...carbon steel..something that has pitting in it..
I guess I just like that OLD TIMEY FEEL. I daydream about bowhunting with my recurve (70lbs draw!!) , I daydream about getting some of those cool mocassins for hunting season.
Sooo..where am I going with all this? I have this knife you see...

and I just cant seem to stop handling it...I have it listed for sale..but I think I should keep it...what do you guys think? I want to know what this custom can do in the woods..I hate safe queens anyway. Gene

You're not getting old. I am 21 and prefer old timey. Wool, Leather,Canvas. I don't know why, I just do lol.

Whoa, Gene! That is a thing of beauty. I don't know if I could bear to get it dirty! It looks like a collector piece for sure. With that upswept tip, it looks like it would be a sweet hunter. What's the steel?

Keep it and use it! That knife deserves to have a patina and wear from honest use in the woods! Sell the other one in the picture, if necessary, but keep the Scagel-looking one!

You can use that knife every day for the rest of your life and pass it on to another generation to use...and they will as well.

Its forged O-1 tool steel. The edge is a zero convex...VERY SHARP and the thing has just the right amount of weight to it. The thing is, I dont know of anyone ever using a Treeman...Jim Behring has told me that he has alot of customers that use them, and he would refinish the knife for me, no problem......so I think I am gonna keep it, if I dont like it ( I can t see any reason I wouldnt like it as a camp knife, its perfect) Jim would touch it up for me. He made this just for me to use as a camp knife...his exact email to me was...Gene, I made you a big camper...you can build shelter, or anything around camp with it...enjoy. I have to admit...it is a really pretty knife....the angel on my shoulder is telling me I am crazy for even thinking about using it...the devil says WTF.

Well said Ron.
I think thats what I mean...I think I can actually start behaving like someone not on ADHD meds...I dont need every knife I see anymore...which considering, Im in my middle 30's...is a good thing. I look at my collection, and I like them all...but do I really need all those knives?? No way.

Gene,

I think your photo shows the warmth and beauty of those natural materals!
As mentioned by others, I would want to keep that custom, and use it. If you can't adapt to using such a lovely knife and it is a little scarred up later and you decide to sell it, have the maker refurb it for you and then you could sell it as a cherry piece again. Worth giving it a little love at first to see how it does!;)

Hell, I'm a sucker for old-timey as well, and I'm not that old.
I catch myself looking at Kifaru packs and wondering if it's worth buying one just to send it off to Frost River and have them make a waxed canvas and leather version. . .

That knife is. . .wow. That sheath is just sexy. Put some honest miles on that thing. Anything less is criminal.

Most of me has no time for the nostalgia stuff and my needs are strictly practical, but when I see something this I wonder. I wonder in the same way as I wonder when I see some of the weapon systems I haven't used; Blackhawks and lever actions. Even leather cartridge belts so popular among the shotgunners here don't get a look in from me. Individually it never occurs to me to miss these things because I'm modern, and synthetics and stainless[ness] is the way forward. But then someone delivers a post with several of these things at once, and I cease to evaluate them as separate entities, preferring rather to see them as whole, as offering an order of experience that I am blind to, and I want to know. It seems to me what you have there is a key to that other land. If I were you I'd have to turn it and find out what is there.

dang - that's a really truly beautiful knife... a real treasure!

should you use it? heck yes! you live once on this planet - do you want to think about how that knife just sat in a drawer when you're at your last days? life is temporary - so are knives. use them - enjoy them.

I've been on the old timey kick for a bit...I've been visiting the trad forums alot as well...THat stuff has charectar...I've alwyas been a bit of a minimalist and cool stuff like that just adds to the flavor...Gene on a seperate note I have a 12 inch tram I've been meaning to send you..but I'm thinking I might send it out and have it convexed first (it'll be more fun that way)

I agree with the other posters. I have a small collection of 20+ knives and while I like them all (most are customs from makers on here on BF), I have more than I need or use. A couple have never been used (a crying shame) and I wonder now and then about selling them to recoup some of the money I spent.

Your camp knife is gorgeous. Keep it and use it well. Sell some of the others if you need to, but keep a beautiful custom and enjoy everything you experience while out with it.

Hi,

A beautiful knife! It needs to be used. It will not "live" until it carries the marks and yes, even the scars of use. An unused knife has no story to tell, nor memories to recall. An unused knife is only a useless thing.

gunknifenut,
I have recently had to remind myself that the true value in a tool is the use you get from it and the sentimental value it builds with time in your hands... $$ value and pristine condition are meaning less and less to me each day. Not sure if it is age or just wisdom finally creeping in... but I like the revelation!! :)

John..I have a 12-14 and 18" trams...thanks a bunch, but I can think of a few other cool dudes on here that could use that thing more than I. Email me your addy, I have something for you as well. Gene

OK...I like where this is going..I have read a few of my own sentiments here! I have been collecting outdoor style knives for a while...and I love them all, but lately I have been looking at my collection and thinking...what the heck am I doing...sure they are cool, but I cant carry them all. I did the same thing years ago with my gun collection..I had quite a few tacticool rifles..and one day, I thought about a SHTF day actually happening..and what would I do?? I relised that I would grab a single rifle and a pistol...a couple of knives and boogy woogy to the woodline. I sold the whole collection after that...I just had a bunch more need for the money in other things in my life.
I love knives alot...they are my hobby, no doubt about that..I know that I cant sell them all like I did my guns...but some of them are repedative in there uses.
I agree...a knife unused has no soul.

Remember what your signature line says, my friend! There IS no such thing as a "safe queen!" Use that beautiful knife, and enjoy making memories with it!

Ron

cool thread gene... that is a great looking knife... i love it...

i too prefer more traditonal tools while in the outdoors...i love roving through the woods with my longbow and a nice fixed blade on my belt, reliving a hunting tale from old times..

Jim Behring does make some beautiful blades, but I can't bring myself to break mine in either!
