Old Timey Quality

The biggest threat to these type of knives would be damage from water or blood. Keep your blade oiled, clean it after use. As for the handles, leather can be re-sealed, brass and antler can be buffed. These are the materials that I started out with. I couldn't afford Stainless Steel or Micarta or G-10. You would be amazed at how a few minutes on a buffing wheel will turn dark brass golden and scruffy antler to a high gloss finish. The blade made turn dark on you, but that it one thing I wouldn't touch. Just some thoughts from some one who has built alot of knives with natural materials...

That is a great looking knife. It just looks "alive". Probably most of that look is due to the leather and antler, materials they were once alive themselves. The Busse looks soulless next to it.

My collection has also made the shift from production knives to customs. I think I have less than a handful of production blades. I have never filled up my main knife drawer with fixed blades and don't think I ever will. Knives I don't use I usually sell to someone who will. I have been thinking lately that a lot of the knives I really like but don't use I should give away to good friends.

I have come to think of my collection as a savings account I can liquidate if I need to. I'm a horrid spendthrift but it's better to spend my money on knives than hookers and crack.

Use that knife and pass it down to your kids.

OK!!! I took it out and used it..I had to! If I thought about it for to long, I would have chickened out. First off...WOW! The knife looks good, feels good, and boy oh boy..it can cut! It made short work of limbs..1" and under took one light swat, and they were gone. I then found a downed oak...it was a bit weathered..but the core was still very hard. It took care of it easily...I took my time..easing into the chops...as you can imagine...I was a bit hesitant! Not to worry, the edge was unfazed..infact..not really and scratches to speak of. Overall...I feel like I finally have a knife that can be my full time partner. I am going to make a cross draw pouch for it..the curved blade seems to be asking for one.

Wow That's alot bigger than I thought...Nice piece bro...Wow I'm not sure I like the way that sounds..LOL

I did the same thing years ago with my gun collection..I had quite a few tacticool rifles..and one day, I thought about a SHTF day actually happening..and what would I do?? I relised that I would grab a single rifle and a pistol...a couple of knives and boogy woogy to the woodline. I sold the whole collection after that...I just had a bunch more need for the money in other things in my life.

I have the same thought all the time regarding guns..I look at my very small collection and think about what I could get rid of, then make excuses not to

Moss 590? Nope my first gun ever...and everyone needs a shotgun(though it has some performance issues and I now hate any kind of plastic on a gun), But I sometimes think about trading it for a coach gun.

10/22? What get rid of a 10/22? HAH
Savage .22? Haven't shot it yet, but its a .22....no such thing as to many

Romanian AK? Built it myself, so that gun is going to the Grave with me

Win 94? Nope, its one of 2 guns I will NEVER sell

Springfield Loaded 1911? Got it in a trade as my future CCW gun, but it has no soul and it to tactical for me(front slide serrations, lightweight trigger and hammer) some times I consider trading it for a plain jane SA Mil-Spec or even a Ruger Vaquero(Horrible idea for a CC gun, i know, but I can't afford another gun and I really want a single action.)

I don't know why, but if a gun has any obvious synthetic materials involved, I don't want it anymore. Same goes for knives. I have ONE knife with Micarta and its going to stay that way lol.

You're not getting old. I am 21 and prefer old timey. Wool, Leather,Canvas. I don't know why, I just do lol.

Well, I'm 37 and still haven't found anything better than wool, leatherl, oilcloth, and slow cooking! S just stop trying and enjoy the rustication :D

I'm 15 and prefer old timey... Stainless steel is a lazy man's steel.

Stainless has its place. guards and pins, for example - seriously, I worked with some people when I was in the Navy who really got advantages out of stainless steel and they were anything but lazy.

But in general, I agree. it's not that hard to care for good carbon steels.

Hell, I'm a sucker for old-timey as well, and I'm not that old.
I catch myself looking at Kifaru packs and wondering if it's worth buying one just to send it off to Frost River and have them make a waxed canvas and leather version. . .

That knife is. . .wow. That sheath is just sexy. Put some honest miles on that thing. Anything less is criminal.

There are TONS of tutorials online for making oilcloth and tinning canvas.

Dude that knife is beautifyl. Looks like it is fun to use.

Wanna sell it? :D

I think that I have figured out that I dont...:D
Am I crazy or do the pics look really good..like action shots. Man, what a great blade. I am a believer, buy a custom that you want...and enjoy. Gene

Gene,
It looks fantastic in use. A real treasure. I'm glad you decided to hold on to that. A family heirloom if I ever saw one.

I agree on the hooker thing..but crack is OK in small quantities.

Happy to hear that you "broke it in", Gene! Now THAT is what that knife was built to do! You've got yourself one whale of a camp knife, my friend!
