Olight getting into the knife game

I’d pick one of these up if not for the hideous chili. I hate finger choils with a passion. I’m so sick of them being included. They’re useless and ugly. So many beautiful knives have been ruined for the sake of this fad. If you can’t handle a folding pocket knife properly and need to choke up on it for more control maybe you should reconsider using one.
The only choils I like are the Spyderco kind. Otherwise, I feel like my fat fingers are gonna get nicked if I try to use it. Plus, the way they do it, part of the choil is intergrated into the handle, so you don't lose as much edge. Ugh, one of the reason I don't like the Ferrum Forge/WE knives.

Not a huge fan of the choil either but knife ergos are OK... As far as I know Oknife is made by Kizer.
I'm fine with the steel too, it's not a hard use knife, it doesn't really need fancy steel, especially when priced for $50+
Blade seems little bit on the short site with the listed 3.4" if I remember right, I don't know about if this is with or without the choil.
Blue scales was limited edition of 5000, completely sold for few hours. They will not manufacture it any more, according to info from their EU rep.
Black scales were sold out yesterday by noon so I guess there are plenty of people who trust Olight because of their flashlight products.

I don’t really have any interest in the knives.

I like Olight flashlights. I’ve got some great lights from Surefire, First Light, Novatac, etc. but Olights are what I carry and use most. An SR1 is always on me. It has great output for its size and the USB charging is convenient.

I also like my copper O-Pen2 and ordered a Pro version. If you don’t like the refills there’s a guy on Etsy who sells an adapter to use a Fisher refill: https://etsy.me/2EIHvy6

Olight makes good stuff, and as importantly has decent customer service. This knife like c7m2p3 said, it's a great way to get more people interested in knives. I agree that sticking "O" in front of everything is a goofy Apple-like marketing thing.
Murdermook is 100% right that some of their lights get really hot, but at their average price point you can't get fancy heat dissipation AND super brightness- also they are now starting to take care of this with proximity sensors that turn down/off the light if it detects this going on.
They are a really innovative brand- their LEP weapon light is a good example, unlike an LED it can throw a tight beam a couple hundred meters. If you haven't seen an LEP light in person, it's probably something most people here would appreciate.
Even the little bulbs (sorry, "O"bulbs) they started selling are neat little gadgets- very strong magnetic base, waterproof, and 4 very useful modes. I am finding myself using it almost daily.
I bet their next knife will be something much more interesting, this is their modus operandi- they put something out there and pay attention to their customers' feedback to make it better. I don't have any of their pens, can anyone say whether or not their second pen addressed a lot of the complaints from the first?

I prefer Convoy or Sofirn for flashlights but Olight definitely makes a good product. I use both their OLantern and their universal magnetic charger. I've also given people Olights as gifts and the feedback is always great. There still seems to be a significant quality gap between what's available at big-box or hardware stores versus online brands like Olight, Fenix, Convoy, Sofirn, etc. It's sort of like all the people still using alkaline batteries despite better alternatives. (I've helped a lot of friends and family upgrade to Eneloops for their AA and AAA needs.)

I passed on the OPen because I didn't like the refill situation. I had already streamlined all my EDC and desk pens to use Energel refills. Besides, I already have a bunch of good flashlights between EDC, my desk, every room of the house, etc. ☺️

As far as the knife, there are certainly flashlight guys who are not knife guys. There are gun guys who use OLights on their guns but are still carrying garbage knives with gun company logos. For those people, this could be either an upgrade or an introduction to decent knives.

That pocket clip looks a lot like CJRB/Artisan Cutlery. I wonder if that’s their OEM?

Never mind, it’s definitely not the same clip.

I wish Surefire would reopen their blade division. I really liked the one I own(ed). My niece was given a choice of any knife in my collection, she wanted the Surefire. She was also given the choice of any of the AR15s in my collection, she choose wisely on that as well.

I'm one of them after bunch of other brand names failed one way or another throughout the years.
Probably they are not the best flashlights but are built solid, fair priced, and take a lots of banging before they fail. I have old and new models weapon lights, as well as other flashlights from Olight.
All were outstanding with very few small issues, I guess every brand have those.
My AR light is Odin and friend of mine, LEO, had a chance to shoot my gun at night, he liked it so much that he order it for himself and some other guys got one of those too.
Their pistol lights with the green laser are also very well built and sturdy.

More chinese junk  Their marketing and lights are crap. Their lights have a very high output for 2 or 5 mins, not useful runtime like Surefire or Streamlight. They contact every youtuber and "name" in the biz to shill for them.

As someone who has actually purchased and used Olights, I'm calling shenanigans on this comment. I don't have experience with Surefire, but I like Olight better than Streamlight overall.

One of the issues across the board with extreme outputs on flashlights is sag or step-down for temperature regulation. There is always a balance between output, run-time, and portability. Having a high or turbo mode that puts out extreme lumens from an 18650 or 21700 lithium battery will be impressive, but will usually not be sustainable for more than a few minutes. Either it creates a situation where the high current drain causes the battery output to sag, or the light gets hot enough to cause trouble for components and temperature regulation kicks in. Now, I don't know which models you've tried. Usually, flashlights capable of such extreme modes also have lower modes that are much more stable and capable of much longer run times.

Coincidentally, I prefer both Sofirn and Convoy to Olight. Both of those are Chinese companies. I've put huge amounts of use on Sofirn and Convoy flashlights across several form factors, battery types, and applications from AAA keychain lights to 21700 dive lights. I use a Convoy flashlight every day for nightly nature walks, observing wildlife, etc.

Why do people not like a large forward choil? I tend to dislike small forward “finger choils” as it comes off like the manufacture didn’t fully commit to making it large enough to fit a finger in there, so you don’t know if it’s actually just a sharpening choil. Seeing this is refreshing.

Personally I love a good finger choil, but then I don't generally need every last millimeter of edge during my day

Olight seems to have removed knives from their webpage . Does anyone have information on why.
I don't like the choil for sure. This has WE/Civivi manufacturing written all over it imo. I bet they produce it for olight. Or perhaps Bestech.
Kizer makes them for Olight, at least they did .

Odin turbo is amazing. At least I can say they taught me what an "LEP" is. Even non-gear people are astounded by how far that beam goes still... I think "collimated" is a close enough word to use here. I. E. At 200 yards it's still a super bright 6×4 foot area with almost no spill.

The thing that bugs me most is the fact that they can't manage to keep somevstock on the USA so you wait weeks to get stuff from the sales.

The knives were probably just an experiment. They seem to experiment which is good. It's a weird company. Maybe the best example of the weirdness is the Obulb MC which is superb for fun and usefulness but for what seems like another tiny bit of R&D they could have added key features like dimming and better motion sensors.
If the motion sensor worked while not plugged in, I'd buy a dozen just to set up a camp perimeter.

Olight does experiment with different things. Are the knives "just" an experiment or is this going to be a regular thing? Time will tell but my guess is "probably".

There was already a precedent for flashlight companies getting into knives. The Ruike brand was launched by Fenix Flashlights and has their knives made by Sanrenmu. Olight is a popular brand in the greater EDC community. Some people love the brand, the quirky naming convention, etc.; and Olight knows it. So an Olight-branded knife makes sense. Having them made by Kizer was a good idea. It looks like initial models were going for broad reach and "cool factor", such as in the multiple opening methods on one model or the blue color accents.

The best thing I've seen from them so far is a limited edition of their Beagle. I'll be keeping an eye on this product line. If I see one that looks right for me, I'll give it a try.
