Sometimes when you can't think of any other word, it's because... that's the word, and you should just stop overthinking. My black letters were actually key to solving this, as they ruled out at least three possible words based on the letter pattern revealed on my second guess, which left me with just one word that I could think of.

For me, the key yesterday was the lucky green L, which drastically limited the number of words you could get. I find starting with LEAST helps me determine if the vowel(s) are adjacent, and if they are not, then usually it's alternating consonants and vowels, and with E not being the second letter, I had LA_E_ as my most likely pattern.

I always try to include an R in my second guess, and in this case LAYER was the only word I could think of that would let me do that.
