Sorry, the X was meant as a variable...number from 1-6. The asterisk was the question, which Cvrobinson answered as indicating hard mode.

OIC. Still think X means FAIL - 6 tries attempted w/o solving the puzzle.

I don't intentionally use "hard mode" when playing the game, so that explains the *.

Can't say I that I always see the * when I see a reported failure reported online but I often see it, so apparently a lot of people play in "hard mode."

I am really not sure what I could have done to improve my guessing on this one. I had the vowel pattern for sure at guess two, but there were at least nine options after that (no consult of a word list, just at least nine I could think of), and they would take at least three words to eliminate based on duplicate letters.

EDIT: Well, actually, if I had reversed guess four and five I would have finished in five.

Despite the discussion above, thought the other word
was more common & hence less likely.

Worst case, a Bogey 5 which was WordleBot's score today.

Current NYT Average: 4.4

2 choices after 2 and only 1 after 3.

No WAY!!!!

My current "win streak" is 324 and I want to keep it going, but . . .

You can do a search on Twitter for "Wordle" and you'll find any # of reported failures, especially today because this was a difficult puzzle.

Even WordleBot scored a Bogey 5 today!

I used to think r8shell was crazy when she said it was easier on hard mode. Then I thought I’d give it a try and I’m hooked. Can’t go back now

FWIW, before the new Wordle Editor took over, the people who run WordleBot reported that the bot's average scores were 3.6 in standard mode and 3.7 in hard mode. So, at least statistically, hard mode should be marginally more difficult than standard mode.

I gave it a "like" because I'm not going to sympathize with a "bot" and because I'm happy whenever I can beat it.

So, it's an expression of "shadenfreude" on my part. Not that the "bot" gives a f*ck. LOL!
