On Playing Wordle . . .

If you scroll through his posts, you will see that he almost always uses ADIEU and STORY. I often use RAISE and COUTH. Sometimes I'll go rogue after RAISE, but usually regret it. I would call these vowel based strategies.
I was using CHEAT a lot to get what I think are the two most commonly occurring vowels and the CH- and TH- digraphs, but it has often not helped me at all.

What's your early guess strategy?

I don't try to guess the word until the 3rd try. I always use the same 2 starting words -- ADIEU and STORY -- without fail.

I see no point in varying the starting words because that just adds addtional randomness and variation into the game.

My 2 starting words incorporate every vowel (AEIOU) and Y which is a vowel/consonant wobbler, and 4 common consonants (DSTR). Every word has a least 1-2 of these letters in it and more often than not 3-4.

Using these starting words, I have an over all average of 3.7 for 190 games. For the 1st 45 games, my average was only 4.14. Pretty poor.

However, my average has been 3.59 for the past 145 games. Much better. WordleBot claims an average of 3.4 but provides no documentation to prove it. I often score better than WordleBot does.

This is what "works" for me.

Have you ever been skunked sgt1372 sgt1372 ?
Only when I first started playing and was learning how to play the game.

No failures in the past 191 games, including today's ridiculous word, which is when I started keeping score. ;)

But there are so many words where it could have easily happened. "Luck" often has as much to do w/the result as "skill" does.

So, it's often better to be lucky than smart when it comes to playing Wordle.

Pretty much the same experience here. First game I ever tried (and didn’t understand) was my only loss until recently…chased a “chaser” off the page.

Truly a lucky guess!

WorldBot said there were 7 possibilities but I couldn't
think of 1 of them.

So just entered a bunch of random letters patterns that all
came up "Not in word list" until the answer was accepted.
Had no idea that it was a real word. Had to look up the dfn.

LOL!! ;)

The current NYT average is 4.1.

Unlike today's word, TRYST was the only possible answer
given the letters revealed and I actually was able to "see" it. :)

The final NYT average was 3.8.

This is one of THOSE puzzles.

Based on the letter pattern that I was using, there
were at least 18 possibilities.

So, what did I do? I just chose the 1st possible word
starting, as I do, w/letters on the top line of the keyboard

Pure luck to get it on the 1st try. Easily could have been a fail.

Surprisingly, the current NYT average is only 4.3.

Again, just luck. Didn't even know MIDGE was a word.
Had to look up the definition:

"Any of numerous small nonbiting flies of the family
Chironomidae, having aquatic larvae and often forming
large swarms near ponds and lakes"

Who knew? LOL!

The final NYT average was 4.1.

A tough word for me. Broke a string of 6 Bridies. :(

Wasted a guess on a word that I didn't know was a word,
but it did yield 2 extra letters that led to the answer.

Oh well . . . makes up for more than a few lucky guesses like
the word POWER below. ;)

The current NYT average is 4.1.

A 1 out of at least 18 chances to get it in 3. Blind luck! :)

The final NYT average was 4.3.
