On the fence Duke vs Woodsman

I hope to someday own one. It was already future tense . . . now it may be much more future tense! It really is an awesome knife.

Looking closely at the bushfinger, looks like a smaller woodsman in shape and form.

That in encouraging. So many great blades. Its sort of like Christmas every Friday, a bummer to miss one but get excited again about next week.
Just waiting for the material combo I like and the speed to claim it!

Andy has made a lot of the Woodsman model over the years. It is a complex grind, but he didn't burn out on it over night. He is a very skilled craftsman. There are several of them out there. One thing that would aid you in your quest would be PM capability here, and the ability to release catches that aren't quite what you wanted when you do score the one you want. There are several reasons most of us here spend the money to be be gold members. The capability more than makes up for the $30 membership fees in quicker communications and the ability to sell to a captive market that is already looking for what you want to sell in most cases.

I'd assume they'd come back at some point as well. It's too popular of a model to disappear forever, but don't take my word for it. Since there's quite a few out there, you can score them on the secondary markets mist lists.

I'm with you mist, I had two of them at one point and sold one off to honor my no duplicates rule. Too bad I didn't keep it (my prettiest Fiddleback I've ever owned but too pretty to use).

That's how I was with that gorgeous black ash Shank I had. It was beautiful, but in tapered 1/8 I feared it was a bit delicate for me, so I passed it on in hopes of landing a 5/32 or 3/16 later rather than risk ruining such a gorgeous piece of cutlery

Actually...I started a lengthy discussion a while back on just this same subject, because I love my Woodsman so and wanted a smaller version for day hikes and picnics. The common consensus was that the shank was about as close to a small Woodsman as it got at the time, hence the above mentioned Shank, but that was my learning experience that other than as a dedicated kitchen knife, I fear tapered 1/8 is really not for me personally. This knife was gorgeous to me, and I will eventually get a heavier version of it as I still want a smaller Woodsman for day hikes and picnics

You may notice, looking at the blade profiles, the Shank and Woodsman are very similar

While the Bushfinger has a good bit more belly to it, though still an excellent knife, just trying to illustrate differences and similarities....

Thanks mistwalker. I did pick up a basic membership, would I really need a gold membership? I don't think I would be moving too many knives. As is I only have cheap-o and factory run stuff. I hope to make one of fiddlebacks my first "real" knife, at least as I see it. I would only be able to pick up a couple over a year or so at the average price they run so I have to try to get it right when I finally get to buy one.

I get the guy is serious about his work, as an artist I can relate. I can only imagine how difficult that grind on that shape would be.

At this point unless a woodsman in one of the colors I like dropped out of the sky I will focus on trying to get a bushfinger in one of those color sets or similar colors. Leuku or a duke if I get lucky enough there also. That combo on that shank is my favorite, second is the emerald green/black combo.
Eyeballing the WAS badger now too, great looking knife.

Anyway, would it be best to post in the fleamarket about what I am looking for to see if anyone has whatever I list to sell, that tend to work better?
Is the a WTB thread? (Want To Buy). Ive been stalking blade forums for some time. Just now in a position to score a blade.

I was thinking of waiting for bladeshow but not sure I want to drive 8 hours to find empty tables at 5am if its anything like around here, never been to one. I was thinking of planning on driving up night before, get a room and get there before the doors open to get a shot, thats not till June I think.

Hah ! My mother in law says the same thing.

I am a righty but I cut with my left, looks like I am not alone.

I am mostly ambidextrous...so I tend to change up hands, but do tend to put the knife on my left. I guess we're just rebels like that :)

There are at least two more heat treated blades left in our stock. They will likely get finished.

D*mn it Brian. I haven't ever considered a shank before. It just wasn't my style. I looked at your pics on this page, read your input and now I'm checking which non-Fiddlebacks I can sell to grab a Shank from one of the dealers. I love my "woods" knives but when you live in Michigan the kitchen is the primary area for usage until about June. :D

Hmmmm... Anybody need a cute lap dog? Cheap! I'll throw in a sweet middle aged cat as a 2 for 1. What a bargain!

Sorry Dave :o After finally handling one a few weeks ago, I suppose we should both be glad the Bear Paw isn't typically (if ever?) made guardless...with that high handle it would also work great on a cutting board and the issue could get really intense :) I will say that I agree, and last winter did wonders for my kitchen experiments :D

Looking for a pic of a woodsman and a bushfinger together if anyone can point me to one, no luck yet.

Thanks Nutramac, yeah that is a slick pair. Dyed box elder and curly oak or lacewood?

Hey,
There's a woodsman on ebay ending Sat. They have it listed as a hunter but its a woodsman. Dyed green curly Nice.
NUTRAMAC. I'm suggesting he pick up a hunter based on what he's looking for. But that curly oak is sweet I have a bushcrafter in curly oak.
