For TL/DR or can't understand see my reply below ***

I've been a member here for years, recently (very) upgraded to a paid subscription because I like this site and am a huge knife collector, all brands old new; does not matter. So today a member "HousiN" who posted his email in an open thread for a 3300. Alright so I email him. Quick response "I am an American citizen and private message me" ok fair enough I post a quick reply and send a PM. His post stated a price and "OBO". We're emailing and I send him my offer and
he sends me his PayPal account. So now the email becomes accusatory and essentially rude. I Clairfy myself on where I'm located what I'm about and a quick synopsis of who I am. Another email with " I agreed to your offer when I sent my email" (I can't read minds and didn't know that an email meant an explicit agreement to my offer) mind you I've been clear as day even to the point of telling seller that I'd need another day if he wanted his full price. I send monies via pay pal. So I get an email and shortly thereafter a PayPal refund...after seller agrees to terms and both parties are "satisfied" he sends another mail with and I paraphrase " this seems sketchy, you have a po box, I renig my offer". So for being what I would want in a BF member not having him pay fees i now have to wait 3-5 days as per PayPal to return funds to my account. No transaction, no real justification save i gave him my full address and also included a po (so he can choose ups, usps or any combination there of). I can't reccomend this guy as he demanded 5+ positive reviews. So my question is after I've been upfront and clear as day how is a new user supposed to handle the exchange when all these people will not even give you a chance because you don't have their high level of reccomendation. This has been extremely frustrating. I followed all the guidelines and again because this user posted his email on a public thread I get the shaft becusse he's on a high horse and can barley see the rest of the peons below him. Must be nice. I didn't get robbed but this was an utterly huge waste of time and now have to transfer monies. Also of note I have full ability and rights to own any type of knife in my jurisdiction and this was not even asked (which is fine, just for those of you who may point out that the 3300 is an auto).

I'm going to tell you this nicely, before others tell you less nicely - Your post is very, very difficult to understand. I've read it a couple of times and really can't tell what happened.

Glad I'm not the only one. OP, maybe the problem you had was caused by a similar misunderstanding between you and the seller.

What happens in these situations, when a problem arises, is people get upset. Instead of thinking through the problem, they blurt out the story, and it often isn't very clear. Details get left out, lines run into each other, the story becomes a "black wall of text".

Relax, don't overthink it. You've had a bad experience with one seller. Others are going to be willing to deal with you, and future deals will go more smoothly.

I've had multiple succesful transactions starting totally from new. I didn't even really do any courting and sometimes kind of sent low ball offers. I believe I only have one feedback still. Part of it is just how you present yourself.

You also have to accept that not every deal is going to get done. They didn't want to send to a PO box. That seems reasonable. It doesn't sound like you alerted them of a PO box before sending payment and they got cold feet after. Nothing personal and you can probably find someone who would gladly ship to you.

If you have anything other than a normal street address just tell them up front. I have an APO I've had one for over a decade now, my PP address is verified to my APO and people are still uncomfortable shipping there. Since I know this I'll tell them I'll take it if they'll ship to my APO it gives them an out before any money get exchanged and I've only had one person say no.

I hear you guys, im not upset or emotional just frustrated. It's hard to understand because that is the events of how this played out. 1 - the poster posted his email in an open thread 2 - I emailed him 3- received email back stating skepticism about my citizenship and asked me to go to blade forums 3 I go to blade forums make quick reply and PM seller 4 - I get email back (he chose to do this outside of bf not I) stating he saw my post 5 - I offer a lower price 6 - I get no response just a repeat email 7 - i send another email, telling seller if price I asked was too low I would need till today (a business day - Monday) 8 - seller emails me stating I'm somehow being sketchy and this is why they need more positive reviews etc etc 9 - I return email stating exactly what I did before (I've been clear as day, I offered this price, you didn't respond, so now I ask if you want your original price) I reinforce that I've been upfront even accomadating to this individual. (I'm not going to squabble over a couple bucks overal) 10 - seller responds with "oh sorry, I thought you knew I accepted your offer when I sent you just me email address" 11 - I say no problem man it happens I'll send monies now 12 - monies sent with receipt of transaction 13 - I send email with address 14 - last email I get is this whole thing was sketchy you ain't right I'm refunding your money etc etc, and I did tel him I always put my street address with both (it gives people the option to use usps, ups or any combination thereof, there choice) I will say ups is much preferable, usually faster and just more secure.

Again I just thought this was worth sharing cause this is what forums are for, I'm not trying to denigrate this indidual just share what happened. I don't know what I did wrong (if any thing) to warrant this individual backing out last minute (I know he has every right to) but at a certain point after communicating with people, You should be able to understand what their about. (Save my op, lol sorry it makes sense to me)

I appreciate all your responses and again apologies for the confusing layout. And again I ain't butt hurt just irritated that I have now to wait for PayPal and the bank. I'm just saying this could have been avoided, without me getting the shaft.

I'm not going to leave the site or anything rash, but again I wanted to share this experience. My first experience here as a brand new user was unbelievable it was so smooth bing bang boom no prob. Again thanks for replies and insight

 on the re-write. It makes perfect sense, as does your frustration. As has been said above, don't let it get you down. Some sellers are more "strict" than others - and not without good reason. You'll just have to work your way through the process of doing successful transactions until even the most cautious of sellers will be happy to deal with you. Cheers.

Not sure this applies, but you will need to use the same mailing address that PP provides them, or some are not going to deal.
If you can go over the transaction and learn something that will help with future transactions it would be a plus. There will be more knives to buy then your bank account (most likely) can handle, so don't worry about loosing this one.

Communication is huge in any transaction. I've denied dealing with people because I felt something was off in the way they communicated. If you get a gut feeling to not deal with someone you should go with it, buyer or seller. Not saying you did anything wrong OP. If anything you learned of someone you may not be willing to deal with in the future. These things happen. Move on and deal in confidence here (with PayPal goods of course).

As far as the PO box---a lot of people have them, myself included.

I am far from shady but where I am located, there is no mailbox on the street for the mail carrier. Of course I *have* a physical street address, but for mail I give the PO box. I go to my post office every Friday (or more frequently if I'm expecting something) and gather my mail.

The reasons for PO boxes can vary, but for the building/house I live in, as well as many others on this street, we use post office boxes b/c there have been problems with vandalism in the past. After replacing traditional mailboxes a half dozen times at least, many homeowners decided to use PO boxes instead on my block. Sometimes, like for credit cards, they want a physical address--in those cases, one is given. I have not had one issue with anyone regarding my lack of a curbside mailbox for the past 20 years and counting.

my 2 cents fwiw

I do not ship to PO boxes for new members because 99% of the time it is not a verified/confirmed address in paypal.
This is easy to fake, and wouldn't take much for a scammer to come in and scam people.

from where I sit, looks like it could have been handled better on both sides of the deal...

and ya gotta realize, we're just getting one side of the story also...did you inform the other party you were gonna start a thread in GB&U before you posted here?

remember the acronym K.I.S.S. = Keep It SUPER Simple...

It helps to keep that in mind when posting, and ESPECIALLY in brokering deals...try a simple "I'll take it!" or PM a kindly worded "Best Offer" in one or two sentences. Works for me...

Never ship to a non-paypal address unless you are prepared to lose your item and be out the money. PO box or not really doesn't matter. It is what paypal has on file that counts. This is selling online 101.

Peter Hartwig I always use the same PP address, nothing sketchy in that regard but I thank you for your input.

Ratman79, agreed completely. I too until this never had an issue with a PO box. That's why the surprise and overall frustration.

Luis G. I hear ya brother, I got scammed once on eBay but every thing else on the internet when done properly is usually good to go. Keeping with personal safety if people were to ask id be more then willing to show evidence of my address and legitimacy.

Peteytwopointone - I understand and appreciate your objectivity. I more then welcome the meme we to come here and tell his side. The only thing I can think of is instead of emailing him directly (which he posted on his sale item) I should have done first which I did second (after the email I posted a reply with I'll take it, followed by an PM) thanks for all the I put and positivity.
