One Blade Survival: The Axe

Great Post. I have the same GB axe, I would stand by it hands down no questions asked for just about any situation.

Great review and pics  I've never really used an axe and need to learn how to use one properly. I hope to pick one up and learn soon.

Awesome, the same how I feel about axe's. I grew up on using a hatchet, and moved up to axes as I got older, I still prefer a hatchet for light hikes, just because their handy, but on a canoe trip, or car camping I will take an axe before anything else.

You friggin guys are something else!

I just get used to my kukris: "Oh man, these things rule, much better than my hatchet/axe."

Then you post a thread like this and out come the axe (S&N Pen Bay) and it's: "Man, why did I give this up, it's so versatile!"

Then the kukri "This rules."
Then the axe "I can do anything with this."

So, thanks to yous guys, I CAN'T MAKE UP MY MIND!!

OK, so on one side of the pack, I have a kukri, the other my Pen Bay. Oh wait, I just dropped a load on a Battle Mistress. I don't drop that kind of coin on something and NOT use it. Hmm, strap it to my leg.

Now my legs are unbalanced. OK, put the kukri on the other leg. Now my pack is unbalanced. OK, I like my GI shovel, that will balance it out.

Wonderful, I have 15 pounds of nothing but sharp stuff and a shovel.

Bah, I'll never be an ultralighter.

:D

I have 2, 19 inch Wetterlings large hunters axe's and they are ideal for packing or canoe trips. I had the 13in small hunter's but have always preferred more leverage, 6 inches adds no weight and is safer to boot.

In Colonial America, prior to the American Revolution, there was a saying. An expert woodsman could walk into the Tall Timber, naked and carrying an axe.

Eventually he would return, dressed in a frock coat, weskit, knee britches and silk stockings, driving a coach pulled by four horses.

I want to meet that guy.

Axes are high on my list, for my area which is just above the 45th, along with a SAK. You can do pretty much what you want. However, as you get closer to the equator, the machete becomes much more practical for the individual. For individual carry I too am leaning toward 18-20". Most of my hammers have 16" handles, so I am comfortable in that range.

You think thats bad, I have to fight hard agianst the urge to take a 3lb hammer with me into the woods. There are some times that work just doesn't let go.

Not me. I don't want to meet any guy naked in the woods with an ax.

Not even Brian. :)

Come to think of it, you're right.

I have a few questions for his horses, though.
