One knife for the rest of your life

View attachment 1507401 Without any real parameters it’s tough.

In my current life. It would have to be a pairing knife. I’d likely starve without a good pairing knife. If it doesn’t include kitchen knives. I’d go with a Buck 110. It’s about the biggest knife I can carry without any issues. I’ve carried one of daily for over 35 years now. They have never let me down.

If I was walking into combat or into the woods forever. It would be a Randall model 1.

If it were an island ocean environment it would be something stainless. Probably the Buxton fighter shown in the picture.
Very nice.

They always remind me to make sure I leave the house with a good knife. The lknife in your pocket IS your only knife until you get home.
Pfffft.
Leaving the house, I've got the knife in my pocket, the knife in my other pocket, the one on my belt, the one(s?) in my pack, the one(s?) in my car. Once I start the walk into my workplace, though, I'm down to one on my person because knives are specifically disallowed. One would think that means knives are supplied; but that is not the case.

Without any real parameters it’s tough.
Agreed. Is that one pocket knife to carry, one knife to handle all our daily needs (including ALL food prep), one knife to deal with whatever imaginable/unimaginable hell we may be cast into...

A very difficult question to answer. One knife to handle everything from food prep to fire prep and everything in between. Hmmm, I do change my mind on this, but currently I think I would choose my LT Wright Gns in sabre grind aeb-l. It's tough, slicey, easy to sharpen and resists rust.
Thin enough for food prep and rugged enough for woods work.

Eliteone came back and clarified in post #22, second one down on the second page. He was thinking of the "survival" scenario, but got himself a little keyboard-tied when he made the original post.

So, we're not constrained by the requirements of pocket carry, or legality. We're all alone in the wilderness, with no disapproving NKP's to kill the joy. You could bring along a Mukti, if you wanted to.

One knife? It would have to be a fixed blade.

Folder, the AD-20 in my hand would probably do pretty well.

This could also be the excuse to justify buying one of the Miller Bros sharpened objects.

Though we're now talking even more cash than what Busse is asking for. I know what I'm getting with the Infi heat treat cycle, but I haven't done any research into what Miller Bros does with their Z-Wear.

Whats the likelihood you are gonna have that on you if you survive a crash or something goes wrong if in the mountains though lol.

Speak for yourself! If I had something that ugly-cool, it would never be out of arms-reach!

My first impulse is to snark about the unfairness of changing the rules mid-thread :p, but I'm not going to do that, because you're asking a fair question.

The over-arching theme of Bladeforums, and the entire gear and preparedness community is the "what if" scenario, so even though we've flogged that horse so many times that it's probably begun to enjoy the attention, it's actually part of what motivates our hobby. You could do 99% of knife chores with a scissors and a letter opener, but those are still tools that you choose to have with you for use.

What circumstances could land you in a "survival" scenario? How much knife do you think you'll need? Asking and answering questions about what should be in your ruck for a trip is a core component of "everyday carry". If I think I could end up swimming ashore or walking home, the chances that I will have a substantial cutting tool are pretty good. Though if you're really serious about your scenario-crafting, it's not too difficult to learn knapping.

I see, my bad for not reading the whole thread.
