One multi-tool (Leatherman, SAK, etc.) for survival.

Hmm I quite like the one I bought year ago:

I especially like the saw because it has a nice 90 degree spine that throws a brilliant spark off the ferro rod.

^ that awl should do a pretty good job too, that what I use on my old German Army knife and my newer SA Bushcrafter- rains of sparks :D

For what you get though, Skinth are top notch units. Very customizable from them. They keep track of the market pretty well, so they have a really good idea for sizing.

I would prefer one of my multi tools over one of my SAKs. They are stronger with essentially the same versatility as the SAKs. A multi tool is slower to deploy than the SAK (in most cases) and a little heavier, but in the long run - more useful. Note: I refer to my SAKs as a knife tool and my Leatherman as a multi tool.

Leatherman SuperTool 300. :)

Yes. I have a lot of the mentioned tools/SAKS yada, yada. Maybe 4-5 Leatherman ? I want the same thing in a multi that I do in a hatchet, slightly overbuilt and robust. I do not find the 300s weight or size to be the slightest deterent for me. But to each their own. I am also perfectly happy if all I had was my old Blast. We are choosing a golden coin from a hoard, most anything in these categories are a tremendous help in a pinch. Sak or Leatherman ?.....Leatherman...and on the larger end of the scale.

I agree. Any of the Leatherman or Swiss Tools I own would do the job.

I own a few multi-tools but my go to one is the Victorinox Swiss Tool if I had to choose just one.

My leatherman wave but since this is hypothetical it would have 154cm blade and saws with titanium tools on it

I would go with a SwissChamp, best utility to weight ratio. If one absolutely needs beefy pliers then any good Leatherman or Victorinox multi-tool. Scored a mint current gen Wave at a pawn shop recently, then picked up the bit driver+bits+pocket clip, altogether a very versatile kit in a relatively small package. I still love my Swisstool Spirit (very slender and ergonomic) but its lack of pocket clip has made me retire it in favor of the Wave. Victorinox REALLY needs to hop on the pocket clip bandwagon.

I know these are always hypotheticals, but the narrow focus and situation does make you think about the utility of the tool and the basic requirements needed. As much as I love SAKs (Rucksack, Outrider, Huntsman and several of the Alox models), I think a quality multitool would be my choice. I live in a semi-rural area, so there is always some junk, trash, fencing, wire, cans, etc. where you least expect it. Having a set of pliers is a big bonus. My choice would be my Victorinox Spirit multitool (if this was my only bladed tool, I would make sure it was the X-model with a non-serrated/pointed blade). Of course it would be in its belt pouch along with a small metal saw, LED light (AAA with extra battery), small DMT sharpener and a Firesteel.

Alright Bill, quit holding out on us! Where's the review? This one really has my interest,

ROCK6

That is a nice setup

The narrow focus of this scenario makes it a difficult choice for me. My first thought was probably my Vic Adventurer (essentially a 111mm Tinker) or a One Handed Trekker. Then the narrow focus hit me and I think either a Vic Spirit multi-tool with the blade or a SOG Powerlock. As Rock6 indicated, there is always a lot of junk these days lying around which in a pinch could be useful. Both are very strong multi-tools and I really like having the pliers available for what if's. I don't routinely carry the multi-tool, but the versatility is there. Just picked up a little Leatherman PS5. No blade on it. Will be getting the PS4 for regular day to day work related stuff where just a little pliers action is very useful.

Coincidentally I just bought a skinth pouch for my wingman. The old pouch wore out. It's always with me. I use it all the time many times a day. Probably my 3rd or 4th leatherman. Broke one once and leatherman sent a new one express mail. Reason I've had so many is I loose them. A good pouch is a must

First skinth pouch I've owned. Looks well made. The belt loop will last a long time. Going to get a smaller flashlight to fit one of the side pockets. I've always got a flashlight on me so that will free up some space in my pockets.

So this multi tool will be with me for a while

So I now have a SAK One Hand Trekker and a Leatherman Wave. Both are great, but the Wave feels a bit more sturdy and rugged.

I've only broken a leatherman once cutting a wire with the pliers. The jaw snapped. Sent it to leatherman w a warranty paper printed from their Web site. They express mailed a new one. Good company

Although I own a decent multitool I seldom use it. Mainly because it sits in the bottom of my hiking day pack (the pack that I use 99.5%of the time when I venture outdoors) but is there if I ever need it; mostly for the pliers. I however always EDC a Swiss Army Knife huntsman. Really like having the saw, and the fact that goes in the pocket as opposed to a belt pouch like a multitool.

Both good. I always went with Victorinox or SOG stuff versus Leatherman. But all three are far better than the Gerbers I have owned in terms of strength.
