One trio for a year.

J,
I can understand where you're coming from.
Right now, I'm at the same point as you are, and am suffering from
over-saturation to the point where I've lost a lot of interest in knives.

Your idea of simplifying is a good one, and I've decided to do the same.

Haven't been able to make it to 3 like you have, but figure I could get by with 4.
I'm going for a multi-tool, a folder, a small - medium fixed blade and a larger
fixed blade.
I have a Leatherman Charge, and am going with a Spyderco Native Stainless
Steel in VG-10.
The other two are harder choices, but when I make them, my other knives
will go into the drawer for a year. After that time, we'll have to see whether
I really need/want them any longer or not.

Damn Mike!!! Those blades are sweeeeet!!!

I cant wait to check out some of your blades when im out there.

Between Tony, Marcelo and myself we have a vast array of blades, and of course you will be able to check them all out…

…but with this new pledge, we will have to keep you from using them.

After spending a year with those blades, you might get pretty attatched to em, and not wanna go back!!:D

I think that even if after a year, I decide to go back to whatever, It will be a long strange trip, and the blades Ive chosen will have alot of stories to tell....

Best of luck bro...

Thanks. Same to you on that score.
Now I have to pick two from my nwa sierra scout, nwa woodsman, camp tramp and ratmandu.

tough choice.

Yeah thats a tough one.. Thats why I chose to just make it the next blade I get Too tough to chose!!

I think I'm going to try this as well, but not for a year. I'm in a good position right now in that my knife collection is still fairly small. I think I might try to adopt this mentality, but not just for a given period of time. I'll still enjoy knives. I just wont buy them. Not unless the knife I'm buying fills a role that one of my existing blades doesn't fill. Or, if I lose or destroy something I have, I'll buy something new to replace it. In this way I think I can avoid oversaturating myself with blades and gadgets. In addition, I think you are correct in that it will make me a better outdoorsman. I will make do with what I have until it doesnt work anymore. When that time comes, I can upgrade, which may make some things easier, but at least I'll have the experience and know-how that came before. I speak to my grandmother all the time, and she always says things like, "We used to have to do things the hard way, etc etc etc..." Having this background will make you appreciate and respect the task at hand all the more, even though it may be made easier by a new blade design or gadget. It will also make you appreciate your new tool all the more.

For now, though, I need to buy those tools that I will be relying on until they fail me... ;);)

I think misanthropist is on to something. I think most people don't have much patience for things, or even knowledge, they don't use. I think you should pick a knife you like and use it. Practice and use it to the point that you become an expert with that knife and can do just about anything with it. If you want to add a multitool and a chopper, OK. But practice with them and use them, too. While you're doing this, put the best of the rest of your knives in a display case. I bet some of them are truely works of art.

You could always send those knives that you're tired of, that have spoiled your joy of new steel, to little old me. I'll find the joy in 'em again...and I'll make 'em pay for what they've done to your love of all things new and sharp!:p

I remember you talking about this last night, but I didn't think you would really go through with it  Well, good luck, anyway. I guess I am still too young to really feel bored with my blades. I think that will come sometime in around 60 or so years when I cannot handle them anymore.

As for your choices, since you aren't counting axes and saws, I am assuming hatchets don't count either, in which case you won't need a larger FB than a 5 in blade. Although some tasks may be a little more difficult, I think you can get it done, as long as your blades don't break. ;)

What are you guys up to?

First you talk about all these great knives, then once you have me good and addicted:D, and I start building a collection of blades, you suggest through your actions that I should limit my purchase and use of new blades:grumpy:

is this some sort of a trick to keep me from buying the knives you have your eye on?;)

J,

You are alone bro... I am concerned for you and considering organizing a WS&S intervention:D...

Sincerely,

Gear Whore

Man I carry 3 knives in my right front pocket everyday (Spyderco Military, Spyderco Swick, and a Leatherman Squirt). I have 4 other pockets and my belt carrying the rest. I hope your experiment goes really well and your knife hunger grows.
