Ramm9, it holds up really well over time. I have been using it for years, and I have never experienced any warping or degradation problems. Padauk naturally darkens with age and exposure to sunlight, but I hear that you can apply certain penetrating finishes if you want to preserve that fresh-cut orange glow. Personally, I like the idea of knife handles that get a bit sun tanned with use!
As for location, I purchase mine from Lee Valley in 3 x 24" sheets. Here's the link to their project wood selection: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=43226&cat=1,250,43217 . You can definitely get 1/4" x 3" x 24" sheets for under $20 CDN.
All the best,
- Mike
Thanks much Mike,
After finishing another project with purple heart and declaring never again (like the look, hated working the wood) I had bought a few sets of scales and included the padauk because of the grain and color. I'm going to use the padauk some more and sure don't want to pay the pre-cut scale prices.
You've never seen the rest of my collection or you you wouldn't say I need to by more knivesHere's only a few
Of course you know I assumed there were a couple of others somewhere, but I'm happy I could give you an excuse to show them off.
When I saw all the bushcraft knives I was trying to think of a way to convince you to sell off that Snookum Bushcraft Tool knife, to me, cheap.
After seeing your latest slice of the collection all that comes to mind (and I say this with envy and great respect for your taste) is "you son of a bitch"! Not only the Snookum, but you have (I think) the Ariel S. Nessmuk I've been coveting for a couple of years. I just exchanged PM's yesterday with him about making me that knife but just a plain blade is over a year out.
Then, not only the Snookum, the Nessmuck but the zinger are the auto's! I've been carrying on a thread in the auto forum how to acquire a couple of auto's in a relatively legal way. Yours are the knives I remembers seeing that peaked my interest. I'm not much interested in the "tactical" look except maybe one classic Italian "just because".
Any suggestions who makes/made that style auto and where I should watch for them? I've even been watching for modified 110's.
