One Year With The Spartan Harsey Folder

Saw last week some Harsey folders in Magnacut.

Here's one I just got a few days ago. I too am starting to see them in Magnacut at several different sites.

I just scored a S45VN version of this handle off the bay for a great price. Been wanting this handle for a while!

I have been wanting this one for a long time too. When I saw the Magnacut one at DLT, that clinched it for me. I was really impressed with the anodizing and detail work on the scales.

There are still a couple must-have SHF for me. The Flourishes and the Momento Mori.

The momento mori is pretty sweet. I think a st Michael will be next on the list for myself.

Very nice NorCal! I can't wait till my version gets here next week. Ive been eyeballing this one for a long while and lucked out when I scored one on the exchange for 350! Happy New Year my friend!

I bought an SHF about 1.5 months ago and was super underwhelmed. The grinds on the knife we horrid and the lock up was soft and at 75% as a brand new knife. I was so mad, I bought a new magnacut version while I waited for my S45 version to be fixed or replaced. I sent it back (S45 VN version) and they sent back a Magnacut version. WTF? They dont have an S45 version to replace mine with.

The replacement magnacut one was the build quality I would have expected in the first place, but I'm having a really hard time loving the knives. I truly do not see an advantage over a knife like the Cru wear Adamas..at least, not yet.

A few things I wish they would have done -
1. A slightly wider blade.
2. Wider handle. Especially around where the index finger goes.
3. Hardened steel insert for the frame lock.
4. Serial number
5. Small ricasso for sharpening. The factory edge is rarely sharpened correctly/all the way in the examples that I have seen.

I can understand the cool factor behind it, but it doesn't do anything special. For a knife of its stature and price, it should be far more functional and less of a conversation piece.

Pictures Of my junk S45 version and Magnacut model.

I have 11 large SHFs now 😂 and I can honestly say that all of them have come very sharp with even grinds. Then again none of them are PJ or PVD handles, all are various patterns. It seems like Spartan puts a little more care into the pattern handles. I do have a small PJ SHF that is near perfect though, so I could be wrong and maybe you just got a Friday or Monday knife 😉

I have only three and can tell their edges are all even and symmetric  Lockups are all kind of late, in the 60%-90% range - not sure if there will be any issues like blade play when the locks get worn over time.

If you ever have any issues, Spartan will take care of you. They have been very responsive to every question I've had.

I've noticed that disassembly and cleaning tends to improve the lockup on most of em.
I think an ever slightly larger (in diameter) stop pin will reduce the lockup %, though I'm not sure if it's ever been used by manufacturers to "fix" late lockups (I heard it's a fix for up-and-down blade play issue).

How long was their turn around time if you emailed them? I emailed around the 27th with some questions and word back yet. The more I look at my new SHF, the more irritated I am that the blade is off center and the grind isn't perfect. My first one is great, this one I feel needs some work for a $550 knife. I also reached into my pocket just right and pulled out a bloody finger just north of my nail bed. I was like "wtf did this open on me?" Turns out that the titanium slab has a bur on the inside that sticks proud and caught me just right slicing me open like a paper cut.

Can't make it out from here, but that slab is sharp enough to cut.

Off center and the grind is not $550 grade, IMHO.

This wouldn't piss me off so much if my first one from a year ago wasn't better fit and finish. I like 95% of what this knife is, but I feel like you shouldn't put a "deployed" card signed and proud of your work is this is what you box up for the price point.

There is no bloody way, that a knife of thisnprice should be anything but perfect. Regardless of fancy handle or not, the same amount of care and craftsmanship should be imparted on every knife that leaves the factory. Zero excuses. Absolutely zero.

These knives although impressive, are only 75% complete. They lack certain features that would set them apart.

If they are not closed or after hours Kim emails me back same day all the time. If. You using the contact me thing on website try emailing them directly instead. Hell just give her a call she is nice as can be and will get you taken care of.

That was my next step if I hadn't heard by Tuesday. I'm not difficult to deal with and I get things happen. I have 3 Spartan blades and if they fix this, I'll be down for half a dozen more. What they get right, they get right.

I always try the email contact way the first time just because I hate to call and bother anyone. Sounds like a quick 5 minute chat after the holiday may solve my problems. Thanks for the suggestion.
