This project will stay mostly on the back burner until after the GEC Rendezvous, but it's never completely come off "simmer".;)

Having pretty much run out of known "patented" punches for my periodic HJ projects, and given the joint project with the BF knife, I thought it would be cool to find something new, or at least "old is new again!"

Digging through my HJs, I found one of my faves, this Case Bros. Little Valley.

The knife has some desireable features; age at over 100 years, a deeply stamped blade marking, decent condition, and a punch I haven't used before! I call it the "Little Valley Punch".
We can speculate on the engineering behind its configuration, but I think it is flat-out cool!

Whaddaya Think???

Thank you for the update Charlie, can't wait and I quite enjoy that steep bevel on both ends which terminates to a thin taper on the Case Bros. Little Valley.

Much appreciated for the continued effort. I don't use a punch for leather but rather as a utility tool. The punch you show above would make a great "utility" tool. And, very similar (maybe like a mirror image of nail nick to flat ground side) of your #15 pattern harness jack. See a picture of your #15 below:

Looks like it would hurt a bunch if it slipped. Very efficient-looking!

I'd take that knife exactly as it is, punch and all! Looks like a perfect model for the 2016 Forum Knife to me.:thumbup:

Looks great to me, thanks for the update Charlie.😎🙂
Thanks, Neal
P.S. That's a great Case Bros. looks as though it would feel good in hand 👍🏿👍🏿

I like it.

Just for comparison, here's the punch from a current production Case. Bevel on one side, nail nick on the other.

As R8Shell has shown, the newer Case Junior Scout's punch is similar, but nicely rounded on one side, and has a swedge, which I like very much. It's thick, tough, and feel goods to work with.

The Little Valley Punch, on the other hand, looks a bit like a 'crude pointy thing'. Kind of low on the craftsmanship scale, if you ask me. Much like the punches used by Camillus, after they moved to stainless steel on their 99 scout pattern, before their demise. They pretty much cheaped out on that one, maybe unable to craft a robust enough punch from stainless steel.

This punch will be hefty and strong. I also like the line of it.
Not everyone will like it, but I propose that everyone liking something has basically never happened!!:D

There's been a bunch of posts about the forum knife and I'm a bit lost. Would you mind bringing me up to date about what you think it might...very roughly be? ... I know nothings set in stone and there's probably lots to sort out still, but with all the posts I'm not sure about the basics. I thought it was a single spring equal end spear and punch with some type of jigged covers? Is that right?

I like the punch you posted. It looks easy to sharpen compared to the camp knife. It would be nice if it some how was stout/thick at the tip. I'm not sure if that makes sense but some of the punches have a very thin tip that bends easier than other punches.

Spend a few minutes reading this thread. It sums things up pretty well. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ums-Traditional-Knife-Poll-1-Main-Blade-Shape

The punch I photographed is from a Medium Stockman, and may be different than the one used on the scout. It's actually pretty much flat stock, not rounded at all. I'd say it looks very close to the proposed punch, but with the nail nick on the other side. It's not necessarily the best punch for making holes in leather, but I've found it to be strong and useful for many tasks: scraping, light prying, opening clamshell packaging, spearing grapes.......

This punch will be hefty and strong. I also like the line of it.

Thanks for your patience, we can be a tough crowd, but it seems like every year more folks are pleased than are disappointed with the end result.

I'm sure if Charlie and Bill have anything to do with it, ( and of course they have EVERYTHING to do with it) it will be stout and functional or it will be scraped for a design that is.
When it comes to punches we are VERY fortunate to have THE man in charge of this project............and that's all I have to say about that! (little Forrest Gump 4 u folks!) :D:D
