Only 5 minutes.... what would you take?

I always have a knife in my pocket, so it would probably go, whatever it is at the moment. If I had time to grab it, probably a SAK would be pretty handy.

I'm investing in a fire-resistant safe and bolting it to the floor in case of tornado. Things that won't fit, I think the Craftsman tool-box idea is good and the briefcase is also good. I'll remember this for when I get married early next year. I need to get a bug-out-bag going as well... what do you guys put in your BOBs? And are there any good pre-packed kits like first aid and survival that people are selling? Kinda like a pre-made BOB?

Thanks, and good luck to knivesanonymous! My prayers are with you man...
-Ryan

P.S. Every knife I own has a pocket clip, so Lord knows that all are coming with me.

We didn't have to evacuate. The closest the Harris fire got to us was about 8 miles as far as I can figure from the fire map. And now the wind has changed to away from us. Look out on the other side of the fire!

But since we live on the edge of a brushy ravine that stretches back to where the fire was heading, I thought a moment, then added my Native III to my pocket. Robust enough to cut anything necessary, good edge retension, discrete enough not to upset anyone if I did need to use it.

These fires are getting frighteningly common, each summer Europe gets them too, Greece was really scorched back in August:eek:

My favourite 12 folders are all in a padded knife roll plus I'd take a Bark River Nebula or Woodland (which is very compact but serious). The effect on homes and wildlife&woodland of these fires is terrible, good luck to all:thumbup:

I'd take all of my guns and knives. I could fit all of my knives in a book bag, and I don't have that many guns. If I had time, I'd grab a few rare books that I have.

This may be pushing the 5-minute mark, but this is what I had ready to take with me on Monday.

My Girlfriend had all the important insurance and tax documents, which of course I would have forgotten!

That's my Wallet, Keys, P3D CE with 4 spare batteries (nylon case), Binoculars, Multiple Handkercheifs (probably 4 more not pictured), 2 pairs of Jeans, a Bedroll, a couple of tough-as nails Army Surplus bags, 2 bottles of Smartwater, Trail Mix, my Girlfriend's misc. clothes (the bra's not mine), my misc. clothes, Notebook, Running shoes.

Not pictured: Pepper/CS spray, Inova X5 flashlight, Fixed Griptilian, Mini Griptilian, Garmin GPS, Compass, Windproof lighter, homebrew "Survival" kit, 2 pairs of flip flops (mine and the GF's), a Glowstick, several Keychain lights, a Benchmade/HK folder, 8 Clif Bars. There's also a 'big' first-aid kit with emergency rations under all the clothes, and a neoprene arm-band wallet with about $50.00 in bills in it.

Sounds excessive when I list it all out, and I suppose the backpack is 'cheating' a little, since it stays loaded with most of that stuff regularly, I just shoved more in getting it ready.

The knife I would take would be the which ever EDC happened to be with my keys and my wallet because I would be using what time I had to get my family out safely

A McCloud a Polaski and something to break glass. If homes and lives are threatened I am going to try to help.

If I had 5 minutes, the first thing I would grab would be our family Bible. It would be of great comfort and from a blade standpoint, Hebrews 4:12 says:

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of the soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Thanks for all the responses. Especially those who have been effected. All my thoughts are with you guys.

It's good to hear that kniveanonymous has a house to go back to!

I'll pack up two of my survival packs and a pelican watertight case full of my knives. (They're already packed and ready within 2 minutes!)

Survival pack #1: camp stove, tarp, cutting board, sling shot, gas mask, 5 qt. cast iron pot, cooking utensile.

Survival pack #2: cooking fuel (2 propane and 1 gal. camp fuel), survival belt (2 nimravus strapped on the shoulder, compass, lighter, lighter fluid, SAK, flare, TP, flint).

Pelican watertight case: 3 Fallkniven A1, 2 Entrek Huntsman, 2 Entrek Jag, 2 Cold Steel Oyabun (old reliable Aus8 steel), 1 SOG scuba/demo knife, 2 Ontario 12" machete.

Got these prepared after Hurricane Wilma of 05'. I had only the pelican watertight case back then, survival pack 1 & 2 were prepared after.

Oh yeah, there are also 2 Surefire led flashlights in the pelican case L6 & E2L-Cree.

That's great news knivesanonymous!! Was watching all day at work and my heart goes out to everyone down there.

TKC, That's the most practical answer I have heard yet.

Hey knivesanonymous. I was ducking the Harris fire as it made a run toward Chula Vista. Which fire missed you? And how are you doing with the wind change? You still OK?

Recently had a problem with my furnace that had me thinking about this.

First things I'd get are my cat, my wallet and keys, my portable hard drive that has everything on my desktop backed up to it, and my laptop. The only knife I would grab is my Kabar that my brother gave me for being in his wedding. After all that was out and safely away, if I was able to I'd go back in to try to salvage a decades worth of research notes that are in 3 bankers' boxes.

When I told my wife, who was at work when furnace started to act up, what I would grab she gave me trouble for not thinking of photo albums or the watch she gave me on our wedding day.

If I had only 5 minutes, I would get my spouse and pets out of the house!!

That's why I practice emergency scenarios with my wife so I don't have to get her out of situations like these. If there is early warning of on coming tsunami, drive immediately to the 5th level open parking lot which is 2 minutes away. If there is no time, grab the kid and go upstairs to our neighbor's. My point is there should be some type of planning with your family for emergencies.

The fire has moved south of our house now what a relief. I get to keep all my knives:D

Great news - I'm really happy for you and everyone else that made it as well. :) :)

After an event like this, everything - family, friends, pets, possessions, heirlooms - seem take on a whole new meaning.

thx - cpr
