Ontario Rat 1 A -- Assisted opening Rat 1 !!!

I dislike assisted opening. I don't see the point.

It adds nothing of value, messes with closing of the blade, and the spring is just another small piece to fail.

The "coolness" factor. And may be easier for people with an injured hand.

...I don't see the point.....
The point is that the mechanism will securely lock the blade, regardless of what is happening with you while you're flipping the blade open.
You have a functional knife with only slight movement of your finger, no wrist action or anything like this. For some this is priority. For others like me, this is great convenience, my fingers are stiff, some times tired and so on, I love AO knifes,
small pieces were never a problem, it's simple maintenance, same as cleaning your blade, disassembling your knife to clean and lube it or just as you're changing springs in your mags once in a while...

I'm overly satisfied with my standard RAT 1. I think the only way I'd buy a different version would be a steel upgrade. Even if it was S30V it would compete in the S30V Blur arena...possibly for even less $$$

I would love to see Rat 1 with better steel, I owe one, also the smaller Rat 1-II and I'm not very happy with the steel, especially on the small-one... I purchase two of the large model for my son and they don't hold very well edge...
I will get a second Rat 1 and will probably have a new blade custom made of better steel...

If Ontario was looking for cool they should have tried to get a contract with Emerson to add the wave feature to the rat series. I might have considered one then.

AO, nah my fingers assist just fine.

I could get behind that...

Shit man, $50 just to add a spring and G10? I'd rather buy 2 RAT-1's! Maybe if they were the same price and it had a flipper, but otherwise meh.

That's not a bad idea. I'd like to see a mod for one that adds a "bottle opener" wave feature like they have on the DPx HEST folders. It looks a lot nicer to me than to add a weird protrusion like on the waved Spyderco's.

If Ontario would just come out with a sprint run of 154CM or S30V Rat 2's, it would be game over for all but 1 other knife in my entire collection.

Only reason I'd pick one up is for the g10 scales. The manual model is already fast and smooth, but the scales are garbage. Gimme manual with g10!

Considering the new one is twice as much, you might be able to just get someone to make you some custom G10 scales for the manual version and end up spending the same amount or less.

I think they're catering to those individuals who haven't mastered the ninja like thumb flipping technique. It took me a while to actually get there with lots of practice. Some people never quite master it.

So I just got one today and it's good and bad. The g10 scales? I love em. The bad? My assisted rat is considerably more difficult to open than my unassisted Rat. I don't know if it's gonna need a little break in period or what but my unassisted Rat was smooth right out of the box. Not sure if the spring is too strong or it's hanging up on the detent or what. Not sure what else they may have changed. Looks like there's only a bronze washer on one side instead of both sides like my other Rat. Haven't fiddled with it yet or tore it apart. Hmmmmm. Anybody else got one? Is mine just a tough one? Or are they all like that?

In a way, I'm glad to read your comments. I went back and forth between getting the 1 and the 1A and eventually settled on the manual 1. I generally like assisted knives but if the don't 'assist' then what's the point? I once bought a gerber that was like that (don't judge me!) and returned it to the store promptly. As to the RAT, I don't think there really was a point of making an assisted version. If anything, they should have made an auto version.
