The RAT1 is one of those knives that came onto the market just fine. I bought mine about 4 years ago (whenever they came out... it was $22!) and was looking for a large work knife. The vendor I was buying another knife from suggested I try this as he was looking for some feed back on this knife.
This knife has been a real work horse. I have used it in my construction work mostly on (sometimes off) in rotation with my other two heavier knives. To me, this knife is almost indestructible. I get all kinds of construction gunk (tar, adhesives) on it, use as you would a knife you hate, and even do a bit of light prying with it.
I clean it with charcoal lighter fluid, but a drop of oil on the pivot, put a new edge on it and it is ready to go. Personally, I like AOs and find them most useful. But this one doesn't need that feature. It is easy and reliable to flick open with one hand, and I have never missed having the AO feature.
This knife's simple design and sturdiness doesn't need other parts or pieces that could go wrong. With all the work this thing has done, it still locks up tight, flips open fast, and has no blade wobble. After some time on the site, that says an awful lot to me. I LOVE reliability.
Like others here I wouldn't mind an upgrade to the steel, but then it wouldn't be a $35 knife. And I might worry about taking it to task. Worse, I would miss touching up the edge on site with a piece of 600gr wet and dry sand paper.
They got this knife right. I hits perfectly on all cylinders for me. No AO needed.
