Ontario Utilitac II - Best modern folding knife under $30?

...but there's something about flicking open my Utilitac that is so satisfying.

My coffin/tanto Utilitac had the smoothest action out of box of any knife I own. I was and remain thoroughly impressed with my sample.

My coworker who got it for me, he's just getting into knives as a hobby.
It's so smooth, I plan on letting him borrow my tanto Utililtac so that he can practice his flick-opening technique :D

Digging up an old thread. Got my all black, plain tanto coffin today. Perfection! Dead center blade and solid lock up. Smooth as silk. One of my favorites already. This might be the BK II of folders....

As stated many times before in this thread it might be one of the best and most overlooked folders in it's price class. I really like mine and that is saying much since I don't generally like tantos! :) But the action in mine i silkysmooth and F&F really good. And the handle fits my hand very well.

I got my rounded handle clip point a week ago (shipped to my door for $25!). The knife deserves all the praise it gets. I plan on getting the tanto bladed one as well. I also think these knives make great gifts; I plan on passing some out for birthdays and Christmas.

Old thread for me too. But other good options for sub- $30 folding knives would be Spyderco's Byrd series.

Sorry for the necro-revival, but a few of you original posters are still around.

I am a big fan of this knife. Got three of them and have had a lot of joy using these over-achieving value folders.

Today while carrying my coffin/recurve, I noticed a pretty substantial amount of play up and down. I unlocked the blade, and found I can make the blade move around on the pivot.

Before I tear this down... any ideas on what I’m going to find? I’m thinking the pivot hole on the blade is too large.

I love seeing this thread back at the top!

That is odd. Is the knife new? This is the first you are noticing this?

Obligatory pic. Going on 7 years or so.

I have been using mine for about six years or so. I have three of them. Fantastic budget knives for sure!

I hope to carve out some time to mess around with this particular one to see what’s going on. My gut is still thinking a slight tolerance variation in the pivot.

Side note: I’ve left the factory lanyard on all of them. It’s actually done quite well and another perk of these great folders.

Ha!! Glad to see this thread, definitely one of those few times where a thread-necro is actually a great idea considering how many new folks have joined in the years between then and now that may not know about this long-discontinued knife! Thankfully these are still plentiful on the Extremely Big Auction site, if Ya know what I mean. :D

Did it always have it, or is this a recent development?

I’m not 100 percent sure. I’m more curious than anything to see what it is. At this price point it’s not worth me stressing over. I’ve thought about sending it in. Ontario is awesome and would probably just send me a new one!

Discontinued?
When?
AFAIK it's still in production. BHQ has 'em for $29
