"Oops, I didn't mean to bring this here."

flying up to visit my wife (then fiancé), from Norfolk to Baltimore. I had just gotten back from deployment and was obviously excited to pack-and-go. picked up a nice leather shoulder-strap bag and threw enough clothes for the weekend in it. got to security in the airport and something in my head told me to check my bag when i was taking my shoes off. so i casually dug around the bottom, and to my horror, felt a .38 spl round laying inside. my stomach sank. i knew there wasn't an actual GUN in the bag, but i felt like such an idiot for not checking my RANGE BAG for anything little before packing that morning. there was a line of people behind me, so I kept it in my hand, and in my most humble "i'm so sorry" face, i showed it to the lady at the metal detector (before i went through). it didnt turn out to be a big deal, no other passengers were made aware. all they did was wipe me down for residue and do a more thorough search of my bag.

they said the only reason they let me get on my flight was because i had turned it over to them, rather than the X-ray guy finding it. i suppose the airport gods smiled favorably on me that day. those security guards seemed unusually understanding.

Last year while on vacation in new york city I had a leatherman in my camera bag that I totally forgot about. It got through security checks at the empire state building and the rockerfeller center until a screener at the liberty island ferry terminal found it. I had to explain to the supervisor why I had ignored the large signs that clearly stated no knives or tools allowed as well as all the looks I got from people. Needless to say the supervisor was a reasonable guy and let me keep my place in line while I dashed out and put it in the car.

Benchmade Griptillian into a strip club that had a metal detector at the front door. evidently they had some issues with weapons in the past, so i had to drop my knife at the front door. the whole time i was there the bouncers sat in plain view while passing my knife back and forth, and taking turns flipping it open. needless to say i wasnt amused.

I had to go to court unexpectedly, so took everything off that would set off a detector....except in my wallet I have a survival card with a little sharp edge on it. I also wrapped it in wire for snares if I ever needed. Needless to say it set off the detector. Sent my wallet through the xray, guy looked at it for a sec like what the heck is this. Then he got it and smiled. Didn't take it, was harmless.

I was 15, in high school. I lived out in the country, and had gone skwerl hunting the night before. I had taken my backpack with me hunting, and had put my little .22 pistol in it. Somehow when i was swapping my hunting crap out of the bag, i didn't check the little pouch on the front and the .22 got left in there.

I didn't even realize i had it until 3rd period when i was looking for a pen, and just happened to notice it. The term "abject terror" comes to mind when i think about my reaction. Fortunately no one saw it and i zipped the bag up quickly.

A few minutes later i told the teacher that i was feeling like i was going to throw up, and got excused to go to the nurse. I got her to approve me going home, and my grandmother came and picked me up.

No one ever knew about it, but it ruined my day badlike!

Left my Swiss key on my key ring and the security guy at court made a big deal about it.

Security - you can't have this in here
Me - ok... You got a trash can or something to toss it in?
Security- if I take it I'm not giving it back.
Me- ok merry Xmas (hands it to him)
Security- its not Xmas sir.
Me- I know just keep it man.
Security-(with an attitude) I'm just doing my job.
Me- (now irritated) I'm not being a smartass just keep it.
Security - (serious attitude now)you have a problem sir.
Me- dude just keep the fuckin key I don't care.

I just walked away from after that. I've been in a f out of this courthouse for 2 years now on custody case for my son and this guard was new. The guy who usually runs it just sighed and rolled his eyes when I saw him 20ft away.

Last year I took a trip to India for a couple of weeks. Made it through security in Illinois, Chicago, London, multiple checkpoints in Indian airports and am finally going through the security checkpoint at the gate (coming out of Dehli I had to go through three security checkpoints to board the plane) and they scan and rescan my bag. I had picked up a bug and so was not feeling well and impatient to get through but what do you do? They go through every pocket of my bag, confiscate my small tape measure (sharp edge???) tried to confiscate the small tweezers in my med kit but are convinced there is something more.

Now understand I had had my bag scanned at least twice at probably 9 or 10 times up to this point. In the bottom of my med kit I had apparently missed (back in Iowa) a small gerber fold out box cutter. As I watched him find it and extract I was convinced my next step was going to be in a small room with a large sikh man with a glove on my way to a jail cell I wouldn't like :)

They ended up calling over the head of security for the airport who actually handled it better than TSA would have. He simply kept it and I was more than happy to board my plane. The security team was ecstatic that they had found what so many other checkpoints had missed.

One of the scariest moments I've had traveling.

Ironically, in VT, you can carry almost anything you want, concealed or openly, without permit, even handguns. The only knife restriction is switchblades longer than 3". You didn't have anything whatsoever to worry about.:D
True hippies. Live and let live. Don't bother me about what's in my pockets, and I won't mind what's in yours.

I mistakenly left a Queen stockman in my pocket when I went to traffic court. I asked the security team if someone could hold onto it for me until after my appearance, but they seemed unable to guarantee I'd get it back. I risked the judge's ire by running all the way back to my truck to leave the knife, and consequently walking into the courtroom a few minutes late. Luckily, he didn't seem to mind.

I went for jury duty with a mini-grip, a kiwi, a ladybug salt and a kubaton key ring expecting to lose them or having to go back to my car. They went through the x ray machine and got handed back to me. Guard said, "all set". Pretty surprising since I am in Massachusetts.

I'm quite astouned by some of your stories. The laws/rules in the US seem to be a bit weird. You're often allowed to carry a gun, but it's forbidden to have a sak in a school/post office?
I don't think there has ever been a day at school without a pocket knife for me. There only was a situation in the Vatican, trying to enter the Sistine Chapel with a SAK (which was confiscated).

It's legal for adults (who are not convicted criminals) to carry concealed pistols, with permits (usually). In some sates it is acceptable to open carry. In some states you don't need a permit to carry concealed. In most states (all?) you cannot carry a pistol into a school or a post office.
It's also legal to carry a side arm when participating in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, horse back riding etc.

I carried a Tenacious every day to college. Although no rules or signs about not having knives, some students and instructors would give me dirty looks when they saw the clip on my pocket.

I carried pocket knives into school Multiple times. I was carrying a CRKT m16 with the titanium handles on it.

every time I carried it into schoolI would give it to my security guard then get it back at the end of the day. I remember a few times walking in with it and never noticing until middle to the end of the day, just kept it and no one would ever say a word unless jokingly

I also used to mow the schools lawn (my community service hours to graduate). I found an Ontario Pilots survival knife in the grass. I walked into the school straight to the principals office and set it on her desk....she gave me a freaked out look not because it was a knife, but because I brought it into the school. She grabbed it, and then walked out to my truck with me and put the knife in my truck.

I once crossed from Canada to US at Vermont by car. There was a problem and we all had to get out of the car and head into the main office to be checked out (paperwork). I realized while standing in front of the desk that I had a push-dagger clipped to my boot. When no-one was looking I casually walked over to the window with my back to the staff and dropped the knife into a cup of coffee, then put the lid on the coffee and dropped it into the trash.
To this day I don't know what the knife laws are like in Vermont, but I do know that in a lot of jurisdictions push-daggers are trouble.
Pretty funny

I flew from Memphis to Sacramento with a cased shotgun as carry on baggage. On the return trip I had a pair of dewat grenades, one MK-2 and an M-67 frag in the case with the shotgun. Of course that was back before DB Cooper was in the news too. Smoking on the plane was allowed (they even gave us complementary two-packs of cigs and matches) and meals were served with real metal knives and forks. I still have a United Airlines complementary pocket knife they gave me on one trip.

Several months ago, I had to go to a building in DC (not a Fed facility) and I had a Leatherman Charge and Spyderco Salt 1 in my backpack and a Leatherman Style CS in my pocket. This place was like going through TSA, and as I entered the building I saw the sign saying "no knives or weapons". They found the Leatherman and Spydie in my backpack as it was X-rayed. The jackass rent-a-cop said I couldn't have those in there. I asked if I could leave them at the desk, and he said again that they could not be in the building. I could leave it in the flower bed outside. (Active duty USAF ID didn't help.) I walked around the block, looking for a hiding place to ditch them, locating a planter on a corner with a large pine thing in it.

Back to the building...

The rent-a-cop found the Style CS when I emptied my pockets and said that couldn't go in, either, because of the scissors. I told him that there are already scissors in this office building and he started giving me a belligerent look and his rent-a-cop associates were getting restless, so I tossed it into the trash can, told the jackass to have a nice day, and headed to my appointment.

I was in a hurry to finish so I could get back to the planter with the hope that my Leatherman and Spydie were still there. They were.

No oops about it, I took a Garand to 8th grade science, show and tell. Nixon was president. All cars used points and condensers. Ah the good old days.

I once accidentally packed a 551 Mini Griptilian, in a pair of work shoes, in carry-on luggage. I'd been stressing that night, and made sure to thoroughly check my luggage to make sure all of my EDC knives were left at home.

As an afterthought, I grabbed a pair of my work shoes out of the car, not realizing that I'd stuffed not only a spare pair of socks in them, but had tossed my work beater in as well.

It was a complete shock when I was stopped at the x-ray machine, since I had absolutely no idea the knife was there. The Mini-Grip was confiscated, of course, and I'm still surprised they didn't give me a harder time over it.

Mines kinda lame but I am in the process of getting hired by the TSA and during the interview I had my bm710 with me. Just ironic thats all. Alot of you guys hate the TSA and with good reason. Ive decided to stay in my current career, but Ive got months before I get an official job offer as it takes a looong time to get hired. Im comfortable where im at, i just like to apply alot and TSAs giving me a shot. I probably wouldnt have brought an edc if i was desperate for a job so yeah most likely no go on joining the dark side. Its fitting though that I was shanked up during!
