Opening bottles?

Alton Brown is a crackup. Somewhere or other he has a nice spiel on keeping kitchen knives sharp.

You folks are so common. Where is your flair? Your zest? (Likely the same place mine is, on hold.)

The other approach would be "champagne saber" style.

Alton Brown has a nice demonstration.

I use to do that with a beer and an old cheap fixed blade knife it was kick ass

Bic lighter, butter knife, actual knife knife, table.. That's some that I use, but most times it's just my SAK. :D

Same principle with a knife, lighter, spoon, etc

I use my knife to open a beer all the time...its called the Victorinox Pioneer and I don't leave home without it. improvising is fine, but im a firm believer in using the right tool for the job.

Don't you have twist caps in the US ? Hell, up here in Canada we can open off a beer cap on the edge of a table, the infamous Bic butt, a spoon, the gunnel of the boat or canoe, or the butt end of a spinning rod. SHEESH!

It depends on the knife, but typically if I'm opening a bottle with a knife it is because I am fresh out of available lighters or bottle openers. In those "emergency" situations when beer must be drank and there is a paucity of appropriate utensils I usually use the spine of the blade near the thumbstuds, or the handle.

You guys got me wrong!
Im not asking so I can do it, in just wondering. I'd never wreck my knives doing something that I have another tool for.
But thanks for the replies!

It's not wrecking them at all. I've been doing it for years and I've never damaged any knife when doing this..

If all you have is a hammer… :D

A good rule of thumb I've found - if it comes with a twist-off, you probably don't want to drink it. :)

I think this is the procedure you're wondering about. Here goes....

Step 1 - stick the edge of the cap between the liners:

Should look like this from the top:

Step 2 - put your thumb on the opposite top edge of the cap, and pry. Pry up and back on the edge between the liners:

Step 3 - Pop! Enjoy!

Does it damage your knife? Sure, a little. I have been doing this for over 12 years with my Al Mar Sere 2K. It marks up the g10 a little. Do I mind? Not a bit. It just adds more character to a well used and trusted tool:

And before any schmartazzes reply, yes, I am aware it's a twist off. This was only for demonstration purposes with a bottle of beer I had on hand. The Sere still popped it off regardless!

I thought you were going to use the jimping (had there been any) as a twisting assist for that, uh, "beer" you have there. Rolling Rock, though? I thought I knew you better.:D

Lol! I hope he dumped it in the toilet after the demo. :P

Drinking a Shorts Humalupalicious, though there was no cap to pop.

Thanks! Yeah that's what I meant. It doesn't bend or chip e liners themselves?

Nah, no damage to the liners at all. I've been popping tops with that knife for years and years, and it only scratches the g10. Doesn't bother me a bit, and it works great!

You do know me better Adam! My brother brings that hipster piss water to the house all the time. I don't like it much, but it was the only thing I had in a bottle.

I did drink most of it, but had to pitch the last bit. Just couldn't stand a full bottle.
