Opinel #8

Not sure about the packaging, but I've had them razor sharp, or not so much, might just be who was on the grinder that shift. For the price, its not a big deal to me, I do a quick apex bevel with an 800 grit ceramic stone, then just polish by edge following strokes on a paddle strop of lee valley green compound. over time it smooths the ridged finish, and does the edge up really nice, and as the patina sort of ebbs and flows it gets more character.

Thx. I'm really curious about the packaging. Anyone know for sure?

Opinel sells/used to sell several multi-piece assortments, usually in a cardboard box or fastened to a single piece of cardboard.
You can see one here:

These are marketed mainly to retailers (e.g. display next to cash register). I suspect the OP's knife which arrived in a plastic bag was from such an assortment, while the other was specifically packaged for individual retail.

I'd also like to know why my #8 came in the box-type packaging and the #6 in a plastic bag. Is this normal?
My #8 came in a baggie too. Made me wonder about it too. But then I remembered seeing a bin full of them at Williams Sonoma or someplace once, I thought maybe they aren't individually packaged. It wouldn't be inconsistent with the old European way of doing things. And no issues with it that I could see.

Thanks for the info, littleknife.

Thanks. I've since received a #6 and #8 Trekking version. Neither of those had a box or a bag. They were loose and unpackaged.

I once touched an Opinel at a street vendor's cart in Paris in what looked like a 40 year old display box of about 20 assorted Openels. He immediately yelled at me so I didn't buy one from him. No wonder the display case was so old.

May be not yelled at you, may be it was a warm "Bonjour !" :p ;)
Don't stop with that past story, try one Opinel ;)
