Opinel: Factory DULL

That's why you have to learn how to sharpen! :D After all, the sharpest knife when used will get dull someday ..

This is all great information on Opinels. Thanks, guys!

The Opinel I have (#10) was wonderfully sharp right out of the box. Also, slightly convex ground.

Most of the Opinels I've seen have been zero-edge. That is, no edge bevel.

Vincent - now that you've said you found one under magnification, I'm going to go back and check mine. Thanks for posting that.

re: pivot
I've had times when it was loose, times when it was "sticky". I've used everything. I think you just have to get used to it. It'll never be a flipper.

mine's barely shaving sharp, finished on Med Ark. (Used DMT coarse 10 strokes to create a mini bevel)

my two #8 opinels weren't shaving sharp. I had to sharpen them both using sandpaper and strop before they would shave. but they're thinly ground so will still slice through soft material easily.

Just got one today. Could feel a burr on one side. A few swipes on a ceramic hone and a strop on bare leather and it is shaving sharp. Cool little knife

11+ year thread brought back to life - is this a new record? :)

Nah. We had one last week that was about 14 years.

What dos I win? The info was what I was looking for

Nothing.

I do find it amusing when people complain about factory sharpness. Especially when it is such an inexpensive knife. Cuz hey, you are either going to use it and it will become dull at which point you will need to sharpen. Either that or you are not going to use it and at that point it does not matter if it is sharp.

I just used the search function and the thread popped up. I was curious to the blade geometry and bevels. One side had no evidence of a bevel at all.

I guess I could have started a new thread but there was some good info in the existing thread. Still figuring out the culture of these forums.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect any newly bought knife to have a decent edge on it. Even cheap ones. Perfect? No. But decent. And the higher the price point the higher the expectation. Just my 2

Mine came off centered and stiff to open also not sharp but I sharpened it no problem but still have trouble opening it smoothly.

Best case, start a new thread, post a link to the old thread into your new thread and continue the discussion. That way you have fresh content with a link to a reference discussion. Just a thought. Fear the Walking Thread!
